Is there a more subtle way of colonization than slaughter? When someone draws near, are their intentions always benign? My master’s project reimagines the Chinese folktale The Painted Skin through the lens of colonialism. In Pu Songling’s tale, a demon wears human skin to deceive—just as colonial powers once entered China under the guise of trade and “civilization,” hiding violence beneath a painted skin. This weekend I went to Stratford Upon Avon for its annual Film Festival where my short film ‘Hippolyta-Titania’ WON for Best Costume and was nominated for Best Shakespeare-Themed Film. How fantastic to win an award for my take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Shakespeare’s birthplace! I shot this film early in 2024 for my MA and entered the festival on a whim. So glad I did! I went to Stratford with my lovely brother @alex_gloworld who composed the soundtrack. It was an exciting day meeting great new film directors and lots of emerging talent taking part in @stratfordonavonfilmfestival Thanks to @agnestreplin the MA course leader for her invaluable guidance, to @ughettap who devised the beautiful choreography, @Kathyuduando my MA course mate who stars in the film and @miranda_shoots_photos for her gorgeous stills. And of course Alex for the music, and patience. FOLDS “Folds (2025)” explores costume design, history, and philosophy through the lens of Qing Dynasty export fans. The project delves into how costumes go beyond aesthetics, serving as tangible records of history, culture, and the human experience. 𝐒𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 is a costume installation reflecting the history of Comfort Women and serving as a warning about contemporary women’s bodily rights. Yi-Ching’s project utilises costume design and street performance as forms of activism to raise awareness of this herstory from World War II. She collects and deconstructs historical military materials, reconstructing them into new forms, while also gathering hair from women around her to embroider historical photographs of Comfort Women. According to United Nations reports, sexual violence in conflict zones remains prevalent and has been rising year by year. Yi-Ching believes that costume can become a tool of resistance—drawing attention from all sides and provoking social awareness. The inseparables. This project investigates the intricate connection between belonging and identity, exploring how environments shape our sense of self and thinking about the boundaries between the individual and others. It questions belonging as an ideal, presenting it instead as an embodied process of craftsmanship, repetition, and return. Additionally, it examines how identity is reconstructed after leaving a place of belonging or breaking long-held beliefs.  The themes are explored through The Inseparables by Simone de Beauvoir, which follows Silvie and Andrée, two girls in post-war France navigating societal expectations. Silvie ultimately reconstructs her identity by rejecting these norms, while Andrée remains confined by them, leading to her gradual decline. At its heart, the story reflects the tension between living for oneself and living for others.  Costume Design - Kathy Udaondo @kathyudaondo Choreography and Performers - Elisa Blasi and Monique Humphreys @elisaablasi @moniquemurphy__ Choreography Support - Tia Hockey @tiamayhockey Cinematography - Dan Adakpor, Nick Sargeant, Oliver Furlong and Alex Marshall Music - Iñaki Udaondo and Iriondo Props - Ibai Madariaga Course Leader - Agnes Treplin @agnestreplin Technical Support - Giulia Pecorari, Vic Aubrey, Sarah Masters and Poppy Lees @performance_techteam #costumedesign #lcf

Where Birds Go to Die Where Birds Go to Die is a ritualistic performance in which a human is able to process and embrace her own death by becoming a hybrid avian creature. It conveys life’s circularity - showing that death marks only a shift in state, and that all living creatures ultimately return to their origins. This fusion enables the protagonist to follow the natural order of life and its end, a rhythm that can be observed continuously in our ecosystem. The Hybrid - Leah Gibby @le.gibby Costume, Concept and Director - Raffy Cosyns @bad_appl Cinematography, Editing and Colour Grading - Gui Süssekind Bailey @guisussekind Sound Design and Music - Oscar Crawford @oscarcrawfordsound Choreography -Tia Hockey @tiamayhockey Course Leader - Agnes Treplin @agnestreplin Technical Support - Giulia Pecorari, Erin Jacques and Vic Aubrey @performance_techteam #costumedesign #lcf

“ From Excretion to Miscarriage, From Shedding to Loss” This piece explores the body as a contested site of power—where laws dictate attire, control reproduction, and deny autonomy. Through layered costumes embodying abortion’s grief, it traces societal oppression (dress codes, body shaming) and reclaims agency. Each thread weaves expectation, loss, and resilience—a luminous rebellion against constraints, transforming sorrow into unbound self-determination. Geometry of the Soul A fluid, sculptural costume embodies the journey of healing and self-discovery. Like a chrysalis transforming into a butterfly, it captures metamorphosis—from constraint to liberation, darkness to light. Flowing with the performer, it mirrors our inner emotional landscape, speaking to moments when we retreat inward to find our center amidst chaos. Through its forms, it celebrates the complexity of connecting with our authentic selves and the transformative power of that journey. Drawing inspiration from Elif Shafak’s ‘The Forty Rules of Love’, alongside the timeless wisdom found in Islamic patterns and Sacred Geometry, this work invites viewers to pause and reflect. In our fast-paced, often overwhelming world, it serves as a gentle reminder that the path to healing begins with returning to oneself - a universal journey that, when shared, creates ripples of inspiration and connection throughout our collective consciousness.     Costume, Direction and Realisation - Nouf Mallawi @noufaaland Course Leader - Agnes Treplin  @agnestreplin Choreography - Tia Hockey @tiamayhockey for Alexander Whitley Dance Company  @whitleydanceco Performer - Serena McCall  @serenamccall_ Cinematography - Alex Marshall, Dan Adakpor, Nick Sargeant and Oliver Furlong Hair and Make-Up - Hannah Haugalokken @hannahaugalokken Photography - Vlada Nebo #costumedesign #lcf
