My original performance and costume concept.
Constructed from buckram, rigilene and cotton drill, the costume creates a rigid, shell-like form with openings throughout. When the slip knots are released, hundreds of hand-dyed silk habotai feathers cascade out, capturing a poignant moment in the Hybridโs journey - one that marks the peak of her existence and her bodyโs gentle decay.ย

The additional characters involved in the ritual are all parts of The Hybrid; The Heart, The Mind and The Body. In the full performance, each piece of The Hybrid confronts their inescapable fate and - once they are in a place of calm and acceptance - The Hybrid embraces each of them, symbolising that each part of her must give up the fight and welcome death as one.
I purposefully chose to include parts the body that we know exist; the inclusion of the soul felt too connected with pre-existing spiritual ideas and I wanted this piece to be accessible to those who donโt already hold beliefs around mortality. Above all, this ritual aims to inspire introspection - that, in the end, we should try to mentally distance ourselves from things that are outside of our control and listen to our bodies.

I live in London, a place where birds are perpetually present but not always seen. This thought led to the question - where do birds go to die?
Imagining a bird could choose its final resting place, the creature may choose to fly in through the window of an abandoned building; warm, quiet and secluded. I became fascinated with the instinctive decision to go somewhere safe to leave the world behind. With no medical intervention or the gaze of concerned onlookers, this process is as natural as the act of death can be.
Therefore, the fusion between bird and human in my performance is symbolic of an idealised death; if an individual could deny treatment, the wishes of others and societal norms and do as a bird can, perhaps they could surrender to death more willingly.

Where Birds Go to Die - a production concept of my own creation - is a ritualistic performance in which a human is able to process and embrace her own death by becoming a hybrid avian creature. I want to convey lifeโs circularity - showing that death marks only a shift in state, and that all living creatures ultimately return to their origins. This fusion enables the protagonist to follow the natural order of life and its end, a rhythm that can be observed continuously in our ecosystem.
The intention of this piece is not to dismiss sorrow or loss, but to situate these feelings within a more expansive narrative, one in which endings follow from beginnings, and quiet acceptance can replace panic at lifeโs natural close.
