KTF Roman Color is the first chromatic font in our library. Built on vibrant colour contrasts, the Color style introduces a patchwork-like interplay of surfaces, transforming the original forms of KTF Roman into something entirely new. Explore the full family, try the styles, and download a trial on our website. Type design: Yevgeniy Anfalov @yevgeniy_anfalov in collaboration with Anna Kovalenko @anna_kvlnko

Shadow is, alongside Outline, the lightest style of KTF Roman. It takes flat forms and pushes them into depth with a sharp offset shadow. Shadow is part of the KTF Roman project, developed in summer 2023 during a workshop at Kyiv Type Foundry. The starting point was archival drawings from Kyivmetropojekt and photographs of metal letters from Kyiv Metro’s Red Line stations in the 1960s. Like the rest of the family, Shadow includes refined ligatures across both Latin and Cyrillic. More on KTF Roman, styles, and trial fonts — on our website. When one side is in shadow, the other is revealed as light. This principle led to a deeper exploration of the three-dimensional form of letters, where light becomes the source of volume. The BlackWhite style reveals the relief of each glyph, creating a clear play of light and shadow that divides the letter into illuminated and shaded parts. The dark half adds visual weight, echoing the Outline style while keeping a strong three-dimensional presence. KTF BlackWhite is part of the KTF Roman, an expanded version of the original KTF Metro Roman. The typeface includes Roman, Outline, Shadow, BlackWhite, and Color styles. The evolution of KTF Roman is built around a simple idea: transforming the three-dimensional character of historic Cyrillic metro lettering into a multilingual typeface. KTF BlackWhite includes a fully developed, high-quality set of Latin and Cyrillic ligatures and open up broader expressive possibilities. KTF Roman Outline While the initial style translated the letterforms into flat graphic shapes, Yevgeniy Anfalov and Anna Kovalenko later explored their spatial potential, developing a series of three-dimensional interpretations. The first “structural” style in KTF Roman is Outline, which serves as the foundation for both BlackWhite and Color. As the name suggests, its design is based on an outline skeleton, articulating the core structure of each letterform. An extensive set of ligatures and broad multilingual support are integral parts of the KTF Roman project. Learn more about KTF Roman, explore the styles, and download a trial version on our website. KTF Metro Roman was created in the summer of 2023 during a workshop with Kyiv Type Foundry students — becoming the starting point for the evolution of KTF Roman. KTF Roman is built around a bold idea: transforming the three-dimensional character of historic Cyrillic metro lettering into a multilingual typeface. The next step was to enrich the design, emphasizing its distinctive character while introducing a sense of playfulness for users. At the same time, the historical references required a careful and responsible approach. After exploring several directions, Yevgen Anfalov and Anna Kovalenko turned to the ligatures of classical Roman engraved letters. One of the sources was Rudolf Koch’s Das Zeichenbuch (1930). The designers identified several principles for constructing ligatures: intersections of two letters; a reduced letter placed inside the counterform of O, U, C, or L; a “big brother” letter supporting its neighbour; ligatures of the conjunction “and” and the article “the”; and connections created by simplifying stems or serifs. As a result, KTF Roman features a fully developed, high-quality set of Latin ligatures. The Cyrillic ligatures mirror the Latin set in precision, opening up broader expressive possibilities.
