Error 417 Expectation Failed's second call for projects is out: Error 406 [Netstalgia] Not Acceptable! 🚫🚫🚫 This time, our focus is on the notion of netstalgia: a selective and idealized remembering of earlier phases of the internet. Netstalgia is platform capitalism's crisis management disguised as cultural memory. It converts platform fatigue into aesthetic revival while leaving extraction, data capture and corporate control untouched. We support artworks that cultivate a clear-eyed view of the past: works that challenge a netstalgia that merely softens critique or reinforces existing platform politics, while also exploring how revisiting history can open pathways to more equitable futures. Our open call asks what protocols, networks, archives and shared conditions are necessary to build an internet worth inhabiting today; how to address governance, moderation and sustainability in calls for decentralization; how to carve out spaces on restrictive platforms to extend users’ scope of action; and how to mobilize migration toward already existing alternatives. 🕳️ Grants from €1,500 to €7,000 🕳️ Open to artists, curators and collectives worldwide 🕳️ Deadline: 4 May 2026 🕳️ Jury: @hotemogf , Olia Lialina, Peter Sunde & Vladan Joler The full call can be found here: https://error417.expectation.fail 🕳️ [link in bio] Feel free to share the call with your networks! 🙏Graphic design by @knoth.renner  🙏 Error 417 Expectation Failed 🌐💄 is an independent foundation supporting radically contemporary Internet art and net-based arts practices. #olialialina #vladanjoler #petersunde

The first animated teaser for the visual concept of Sonic Acts Biennial 2026 (@sonicacts ) — themed Melted for Love — is out now. The design concept serves as an entry point into the fragile architectures of belonging, love, and perception. It reveals how notions of shelter and intimacy are never fixed, but instead remain porous, shifting, and contingent. The sound was specially composed by Aho Ssan (@aho_ssan ) and KMRU @_kamaru_ — highly recommend watching with sound on. Big thanks to Nelly Nakahara for bringing the animation concept to life. 🔑 Visual concept by Christoph Knoth (@christophknoth ), Konrad Renner (@konradrenner ) & Anja Kaiser (@aeni.kaiser ) 🔑 Fonts in use: Limpet (Jung-Lee Type Foundry @jung_lee_type_foundry ) & Bazaine (British Standard Type @britishstandardtype.xyz ) 🔑 Video execution: Nelly Nakahara (@nelly_akane )

In Modes of Cognition: Implications for Large Language Models, N. Katherine Hayles proposes a broadened framework for understanding cognition, extending it beyond conscious human thought to include implicit, nonconscious, and even non-neural processes. Using the SIRAL criteria—sensing, interpreting, responding, anticipating, and learning—she explores cognition across organisms from bacteria to plants, arguing that many life forms meet the cognitive threshold despite lacking brains. By applying these insights to large language models (LLMs), she contends that their behavior satisfies the modified SIRAL criteria. Although LLMs lack physical embodiment, they navigate and interpret vast conceptual environments, produce flexible and anticipatory responses, and learn from data. Their cognitive capacities, she argues, stem not from consciousness but from their place within a broader evolutionary lineage of technics. By reframing cognition and decentering anthropocentric models, N. Katherine Hayles opens pathways to new ethical frameworks for engaging with artificial and biological intelligences alike. 🟠🟢The visual identity that has been developed for Sonic Acts Biennial 2024, ‘The Spell of the Sensuous’ (@sonicacts ), suggests liveliness on many levels. The eyes of humans, animals and other species come to life, awakened by the interactions of users. These eyes engage in subtle motions—a blink, a dilation of pupils, a flutter of eyelids—adding a touch of realism to their digital presence. Through these nuances, a fleeting connection is established, drawing users into a captivating exchange with these ethereal, animated gazes. 🟠🟢The concept also pays homage to Georgia O’Keeffe, an artist renowned for her mythic and uninhabited landscape masterpieces. In O’Keeffe’s own words, remarking on the sensuously intimate and familial act of noticing nature, ‘in a way – nobody sees a flower – really – it is so small – we haven’t time – and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time.’ 🟠🟢The typographic gesture assumes the roles of observer, chronicler, and perpetual traveler, traversing the linear notes of monospace typography. Intertwined with the typography, asemic writing plays the role of silent companions. These signs defy conventional decryption methods, evading semantic clarity. Instead, they beckon us to embrace subjective, inquisitive interpretations, inviting us to delve into uncharted territories of understanding. 🟢Visual identity by Anja Kaiser (@aeni.kaiser ), Christoph Knoth (@christophknoth ) and Konrad Renner (@konradrenner ) 🟠Video execution by Nelly Nakahara (@nelly_akane ) 🟢Typeface ‘Coda’ in use by Anna Cairns (@commatype + @a____cairns ) photo credits: Bora Sekerci, Pieter Kers track ‘Blue tears’ by Aho Ssan (@aho_ssan )   → 2024.sonicacts.com #SAB24 #TheSpelloftheSensuous #asemictypography #uninhabitedlandscapes
