Last week we traveled to Liguria with @_kamaru_ and @capturedbyodede for Near Silence, a project produced and curated by ALMARE exploring “quiet areas”, rural zones marked by low levels of noise pollution, spaces where the effects of the climate crisis can truly be heard. We explored the silent area of Parco Naturale Regionale del Beigua, and these images capture fragments of our days in residence there.

Sound artist KMRU and contemporary artist Nick Verstand premiered their audiovisual collaboration 'As Nature' at @rewirefestival . These soundscapes of @_kamaru_ are responded to by @nickverstand through a wafting spectacle of all-encompassing lightweight fabrics that are manipulated through airflow, LEDs, and smoke. An Olfactory component, developed in collaboration with scent artist @mareikebo.de , further extends the sensory field, expanding the work beyond the visual and auditory. A pleasant yet unusual olfactory layer introduces a subtle tension between nature and electricity into the space. 'As Nature' comes to life as a visceral and provoking glimpse into liminality offering a rare opportunity to encounter sound, vision and scent as a single, evolving environment shaped by natural processes and perception. ‘As Nature' is commissioned by Rewire, Barbican, and Lunchmeat Festival. More ‘As Nature’ dates: Barbican, Milton Court Concert Hall - 27 April Lunchmeat Festival, Prague - 25 September Biennale Musica, Venice - 22 October Photo by @sabine.vnistelrooij and @alexheuvink

The fourth track on Free & Equal Vol.2 is ‘Space of Uncertainty’, composed by KMRU, who has also been part of our residency programme. For Joseph Kamaru (KMRU) a Nairobi-born Berlin-based sound artist, sound is a sensorial medium through which social, material and conceptual interpretations are manifested and contested in his works. KMRU carries with him a repository of listening experiences from Nairobi and beyond, expanding his sonic practices and bringing an awareness of surroundings through creative compositions, installations and performances. He has earned international acclaim from his performances in far-flung locales, establishing a definitive space within ambient experimental music

FOLDS I – IV im Überblick: – FOLDS I (16.04.–06.05.): Klanginstallation, Filmwerkstatt DĂŒsseldorf – FOLDS II (16.04.–06.05.): KlĂ€nge im öffentlichen Raum (u. a. Exhibited a new work - ‘Float - A Wind of Time’ as part of Colomboscope, Srilanka. Float- a Wind of Time (2026) is a radiophonic sound work emerging from KMRU’s ongoing research on mangrove ecologies, archipelagos of the Indian Ocean and beyond
Here, the mangrove becomes both a metaphor and methodology, a porous frame for exploring the interdial rhythms of coastal ecologies where land and ocean continually negotiate time and human presence. Quadraphonic, net, scent and photographs. 2026 (colombo: 21 - 31 January 2026) commisioned by Colomboscope 2026.  Supported by Goethe-Inst Srilanka & TBA-21 Academy. @colomboscope @tba_21 @tba21academy - đŸȘŸđŸƒđŸȘŸ Convening #1: Marine Intersections and Coastlines as Webs (Colombo, Sri Lanka, January 25–27, 2026). Joseph Kamaru, aka KMRU, is a Kenyan sound artist and experimental ambient musician, who’s currently based in Berlin. Over the past decade or so, across a constant stream of releases, concerts, collaborations and sonic research projects, he has built a singular practice of expanded and ‘activated’ listening, opening a space to consider and reflect on auditory environments beyond the norm - like on 2024’s ‘Natur’ (Touch) which soundscaped his home city Nairobi in personal and subtly political terms. His work crisscrosses field recording, improvisation, noise, ambient, machine learning, radio art and expansive hypnotic drones and he’s earned international acclaim for performances in far-flung locales, as well as curating the archives of his late grandfather, famous Kenyan musician Joseph Kamaru, the ‘King of Kikuyu Benga.’ @_kamaru_ ’s latest release ‘Kin’ just came out on @editionsmego , home of much-admired previous records like 2020’s ‘Peel’. As befits a record featuring Christian Fennesz, this is a finely tuned set of widescreen slow builders, their emotionally charged synth patterns and undulating loops seared with sheets of feedback and distortion. KMRU performs at @arnolfiniarts on Friday 24.04.26 Tickets via link in bio. Design: @fem.kecampbell Photo: Glauco Canalis
