Meet Protocol, a programmatic typeface developed by @counter__forms and @base_design (Melbourne) on the occasion of the 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. Tasked with typographically responding to the theme Yield Strength — the maximum stress a material can withstand before undergoing permanent, plastic deformation — Counter Forms members @robert.janes , @tameferal.studio and @matterofsorts designed a generative browser-based type engine. By applying a number of server-side scripts in various combinations to a skeleton font, we created the potential for Protocol to flex, fray, disperse and dissipate.
This logic is then laid bare at yield-strength.com where 15 key models are manipulated by key data sources: the current temperature, wind speed and surface pressure in Adelaide as well as the S&P 500 index. These data points, ingested every 6 hours, are further amplified by the inexorable march of time, setting up Protocol for its inevitable demise at the close of the Biennial on 8 June 2026.
Every 24 hours the website will release new iterations of the typeface, free for viewers to download. We encourage you to use the fonts as you see fit, proliferating Protocol’s program. See the link in our bio.

A bit about the typeface:
RJ Ephemera is a contemporary interpretation of Karlgeorg Hoefer’s Permanent, his often overlooked yet deeply admired classic from the 1960s. Ephemera attempts to reconcile and simplify some of Permanent’s forms while maintaining its crisp detailing and warm, idiosyncratic reading texture. This “selectricised” adaptation takes the letterforms and brutally squishes and stretches them into the 9 unit width system of the iconic IBM Selectric Composer, a typewriter which used a metal “golf ball” element to produce a proportional text output.

Elke Greis (born 1961 in Lingen (Ems), lives in Hamburg) studied fine art in the 1980s at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg under the conceptual artists Franz Erhard Walter, Stanley Brouwn and Lawrence Weiner. The Kunsthalle Lingen is now organising an extensive solo exhibition for her entitled Gestern Heute Morgen (Yesterday Today Tomorrow). Elke Greis works in the medium of drawing and one of the thematic backgrounds of her artistic work is her preoccupation with systems - psychological, political, social and familial - and the mechanisms that determine them and operate within them. In smaller and larger works on paper, gestures are artistically conveyed, in some cases regular structures are created that symbolise systems whose regularity and density are disturbed by deviations, for example from horizontal to vertical. A further level is formed by the change in direction/deviation and the resulting overlaps. In principle, all ‘disruptive factors’ offer the potential for a change of perspective and question existing ideas. Against the backdrop of a time in which systems that have traditionally developed socially, familially, politically or societally are increasingly threatening to come apart at the seams, the exhibition poses questions about the degree and possible consequences of these disruptions for discussion. It is less about a judgement or an ideologically motivated message, but rather about a graphically formulated demonstration and communication of disruptions in abstractly formulated systems - which existed yesterday, exist today and will continue to exist tomorrow. The exhibition encourages us to talk about the causes and their effects on people moving within systems.
