New zine debuting at LA Art Book Fair: Sari-Sari Store by @kaninrices 🧺🇵🇭 In Tagalog, the word sari-sari translates to "variety" or "sundry." Sari-sari stores are a staple of Filipino neighborhoods, providing everyday goods at accessible prices. Despite the recent popularity of franchise convenience stores, they're often considered a third space and are an essential part of Filipino culture and community. The zine features several items commonly sold at sari-sari stores, alongside personal anecdotes of childhood memories associated with these items. The cover was printed in Bright Red, Medium Blue, and Sunflower riso inks on 167gsm paper, while the pages are printed in Federal Blue riso ink on 5 variations of colored paper (pink, green, orange, yellow, blue). The format of the zine is inspired by the sachet packets that usually hang from the ceilings of the stores, while the colors call back to the vibrant signages that adorn the storefronts. We will mainly discuss why the risograph is invaluable to Manila print shops and the overarching importance of archiving print ephemera in the Third World. Thank you to @scadseqa 's Mini Comics Expo for having us as a featured guest! It was our first time going to Savannah and we could not have had it any other way. It was great to talk about zines, riso, and comics and share our work with the amazing students, staff, and professors from @scaddotedu ! We held two workshops: Zinemaking 101 by @annasshole and Riso for Illustration and Photography by @kaninrices . It was great to go through the history, importance, and do a hands-on demo with everyone on zines and riso! We were so touched by everyone's passion and interest. We loved seeing all the work everyone made together in class! It was amazing to see everyone's talents. 🫶 As part of our mission in education and accessibility to the riso medium, we are happy to announce that we will be riso printing workshop participants' works and distributing it through SCAD SEQA! 👉 If you are a SCAD SEQA student who could not go, please DM us and we'll share the deck with you! Thank you to everyone who dropped by our workshops and our table to share with us their passion and love for minicomics, independent publishing, zines, and riso! We're so excited to be at @scadseqa 's Mini Comic Expo next week in Savannah as a featured guest! @kaninrices will be holding a riso file prep workshop specializing in illustration and photography that's open to Mini Comic Expo participants 🐛🐈 We'll also have a Kittybug Press table at Adler Hall on Nov. 8 from 10-4pm! 📝 What is a Risograph? What does it do? How do I print my work in Risograph? In this 90-minute workshop, we'll be answering these questions and guiding you through the process of transforming your artwork (illustrations, comics, etc.) and photographs into vibrant pieces using the Risograph printing technique. Group posters made by participants will be printed in riso and distributed by SCAD SEQA next semester! Dates are TBD but we're excited to see you! ❤️‍🔥 Rice Gallardo is a multidisciplinary designer and artist who has worked across a diverse range of creative fields. They are the co-owner of Kittybug Press They've previously worked for Adult Swim (Teenage Euthanasia) as an animator, Scholastic Graphix (Mabuhay!)as a color flatter, and Devsisters (Cookie Run) as a designer and illustrator. Their illustration work has been exhibited in Manila, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and New York City.
