Jotham Hung is a Taiwanese-American artist whose hand-thrown ceramic sculptures draw from familiar forms, subverting traditional aspects of craft through both intentional and unintentional degradation. His unorthodox process incorporates material waste, failures, and mistakesโreconstituting them into works that challenge established ideas of beauty and perfection.
Using discarded materials and reconstructed forms, his work reflects themes of nostalgia, assimilation, and scarcity shaped by his experience growing up in an immigrant household. Through deconstruction and rebuilding, Hung explores the emotional and social value we attach to the objects we keep and create.
I am so inspired by his work and am drawn to each of his forms and colouration of the glazes. This piece is no longer available but more of his work is currently en route! Stay tuned!
