Dr. Shanna Swan is not only one of the world's leading environmental and reproductive epidemiologists, but was also one of our panelists at SF Climate Week for our screening and discussion of The Plastic Detox. Joined by filmmakers Louie Psihoyos and Josh Murphy, as well as fertility specialist Dr. Thalia Segal, the panel was moderated by our own Dianna Cohen. 👉 🎥 Did you know you can screen this film too? Celebrating EARTH DAY today by remembering the successful efforts to remove the Klamath Dams and allow salmon to return to the upper basin after over 100 years. It’s a reminder that individuals have the power to demand a healthy future and, in this instance, one that makes room for wild. As Margaret Mead said ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever has! @amybowerscordalis @myers.frankie @patagonia

PEOPLE, POLICY, PRODUCT. That’s how this works. Amazing to see the US Department of Health and Human Services turn their focus to the impact of plastics on human health through the STOMP initiative (Systematic Targeting Of Microplastics) just weeks after the release of our @netflix film #ThePlasticDetox There are plenty of things we disagree on, but non consensual ‘Toxic Trespass’ through consumer products should not be one of them.

The Plastic Detox, a new documentary now available on Netflix, examines how much plastic is impacting our health and whether it is possible to detox our bodies from continued exposure. In episode 218 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with one of the film’s producers and directors, Josh ‘Bones’ Murphy, to discuss what went into making the film and how stories like these can help us better understand the plastic pollution crisis while inspiring us to take action in our own lives. Josh Murphy is an Emmy Award–winning filmmaker, director, producer, and writer whose work focuses on character-driven stories at the intersection of humanity and the environment. His films often explore climate, conservation, and human resilience through compelling storytelling. His credits include producing the Tribeca-winning film Here Alone, co-producing The Push, contributing to Alex Gibney’s documentary The Inventor, and directing the acclaimed documentary Artifishal, commissioned by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard. Most recently, he won an Emmy for the Netflix series You Are What You Eat: A Twins Experiment and co-directed and produced the Netflix documentary The Plastic Detox. Before entering filmmaking, he trained as a natural resource scientist and fisheries biologist, inspired early on by Jacques Cousteau’s blend of exploration, storytelling, and environmental advocacy. Have you seen this? I’ve watched and promoted dozens of documentaries over the past 20 years on tackling plastic pollution, this is seriously one of the best. It’s fun to watch, shocking and uplifting all in one. No wonder it’s getting great traction. Congrats to @joshbonesmurphy and all the crew who delivered this powerful contribution to the debate- the campaign for change. Legends! I’ve been pushing for change on plastics, especially packaging for decades, the last 14 years in federal parliament. The wheel turns very slowly on this fight, we are up against some of the biggest, most powerful and influential corporations on the planet. They aren’t going to walk away from their billions without a rearguard action. After from the fact it’s toxic to our body, oceans and environment, it is supercharging fossil fuel exploration. Soon it’s forecasted plastic will be a ‘sink’ for nearly half of the world’s oil, and that means pressure for more oil and fossil fuel exploration in our oceans. Plastic is a lose-lose on so many levels. Politicians are captured by big producers and retailers of plastic - but not all. A documentary like this can help turn the tide. Let me know what you think of this. You will be hearing from me alot more on this subject in my final months in here, it feels like we are so close to getting action on some form of producer responsibility action - maybe legislation…? Gotta keep hope alive. Crikey it’s been a long road.

Thinking a lot about timing lately…and how the parts add up to a whole. I’ve come to realize that most of it is the collision of preparation and timing. When it all comes together it’s a beautiful thing. Hooked into some solid surf not long ago and it just amazed me that it all worked. Kind of a life lesson learned in a matter of seconds. Still thinking about it. Huge thanks @russscully and @roxscullystudio and to Mother Nature for setting the table. 📸 @workforavocados

Today’s the day. The Plastic Detox is out now on @netflix . We are really grateful to @psihoyos @drshannahswan @million_marker @joshbonesmurphy , @caclothfoundry and @unplasticyourlife for letting us be part of telling this story. What we learned while filming honestly changed our lives. The chemicals discussed in this film are hiding in everyday things most of us never think twice about. Once you see it, you can’t really unsee it. It changed our lives, and I really think it can change yours too. If you watch it and it makes you rethink something in your home, share it with someone. That’s how this conversation spreads. #plasticdetox #environmentalhealth #fertilityhealth #plasticfreeliving #netflixdocumentary
