Almost 10 years ago, we shared this video through tears, trying to put into words what it felt like to parent a child with no treatment options targeting the cognitive decline of Hunter syndrome. We talked about how hard it was to push our three-year-old Finn to learn and grow, knowing there could come a day when he would lose those skills.
Last week, something we once only hoped and prayed for became reality: A new treatment for Hunter syndrome was officially approved. It’s the first new treatment approved in 20 years, and only the second ever.
The drug (AVLAYAH) is the same one Finn has been receiving through a clinical trial since 2021. He was among the first patients to receive it.
So much of the future is still unknown, but we’re living in a time where the story of this disease is being rewritten. Finn turns 12 in May. He’s talking, running, swimming, learning to read, and keeping us laughing—things we were never promised.
We’re celebrating this milestone while holding so much hope for every child still waiting for access. We cannot wait for our fellow Hunter syndrome friends to get dosed.
