I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been awarded the 2025 John D. Mineck Furniture Fellowship by @societyofcrafts . I’m immensely grateful for their support of my work and for this community of furniture makers. It’s certainly a challenging path, but I can’t imagine being in a field with more love and passion for the craft. This piece, Kudzu Chair, is part of a body of new work I’ve been developing over the past year — my most ambitious project so far, with more to come very soon. >> found pallet wood, oak, real kudzu vines, 332 composite epoxy/cloth/wire leaves, epoxy clay, acrylic and oil paint I’m deeply excited to share the story and process behind it, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the new works in person. šŸ™šŸƒ

In 'Hypernatural' Joyce Lin employs a variety of artistic techniques to mimic natural materials and challenge our understanding of their intrinsic limitations. From hand-painted wood and non-metallic ā€œmetalā€ surfaces to the cyclical depths of spirals and shadows, her work questions how we decide what feels real. In her 'Kudzu Series', Lin uses harvested kudzu and repurposed materials to build forms that hold belonging and estrangement, growth and decay in the same breath. Now on view at 82 Franklin Street, the exhibition reflects her focus beyond material dissection to grapple with a world in which structure and logic blur with illusion and intent, and the authentic and the artificial become indistinguishable. Explore the works on view: link in bio. Wall color for this exhibition generously provided by @alkemispaint .

Next week, join us for the Spring 2026 Visiting Artist Colloquium public lecture on Wednesday, February 4th at 5pm with artist and furniture maker @jolime , hosted by the @chazenartuw at the Elvehjem L140! Get details and reserve your seat at: art.wisc.edu/public-programs/ Based in Houston, Lin’s practice investigates the relationship between surface and structure and the eroding boundaries between the natural and human-made. Merging meticulous craftsmanship with experimental processes in wood, found materials, fiberglass, and more, she reimagines familiar forms—chairs, tables, and other functional archetypes—as studies on dissection, reconstruction, and mimicry. Raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Lin earned degrees in Furniture Design and Geology-Biology through the @brown.risd Dual Degree Program, an interdisciplinary foundation which continues to inform her work today. She has presented solo exhibitions such as Material Autopsy (2023) and Hypernatural (2025) at @randcompanynyc , and her work has been exhibited at institutions including @mbamtl and @crafthouston . Lin’s pieces are held in the permanent collections of @risdmuseum , @themintmuseum , @carnegiemuseumofart , @munsonutica , @houstonmoca ’s Civic Art Collection, @neworleansmuseumofart , @peabodyessex , and @sfmoma . Her work has been featured in @nytimes , @archpaper , @dwellmagazine , @papercityhouston , and @objects_usa 2020 and 2024. In addition to her studio practice, Lin has taught in the Furniture Design Department at the @risd1877 , supporting students in developing their personal voice as makers. She is the recipient of the 2025 John D. Mineck Fellowship from the Society of Arts + Crafts. Each Wednesday from 5 to 6:15pm this Spring, attend weekly lectures in person in the @chazenartuw Auditorium by some of the nation’s most prominent visiting artists, critics, and gallery and museum directors at @UWMadison at the Visiting Artist Colloquium! Just returned from a short but sweet trip to San Francisco to sign my chair that recently entered the permanent collection of SFMOMA. ā¤ļøšŸ’›šŸ’™ šŸ™ to my friend Madison for capturing the moment in the conservation studio, to the backdrop of an Ellsworth Kelly! Grateful for @jdunlopfletcher and the team at @sfmoma for bringing this piece into the collection. And such a pleasure to meet the conservation staff and explore the museum, which was showing a Suzanne Jackson retrospective that I found so refreshingly warm and uninhibited. Highly recommend. Overall experienced a lot of kindness on my trip. A perfect excuse to see old friends and get a taste of a beautiful city and beautiful weather.

I often put a lot of consideration into what the final work for a show will be - not as a conclusion, but as a moment for me to reflect. For several years, and even more so recently, I’ve struggled with the idea of ā€œhope,ā€ and what it means when I can’t find a reason for it. How do we keep living under these circumstances? How do we survive? A ladder is a new object for me, but an aspirational one. I tend to be sort of brittle when things don’t go as hoped, but my work continually asks me to adapt. I adapted to the kudzu, just as it did to me. Hugely thankful to everyone who has come by the show so far. You can catch it at @randcompanynyc until January 9. — Kudzu Ladder, 2025. Found wood, kudzu vine, epoxy, cloth, wire, paint, steel. šŸ“ø 1-2: @_loganjackson

Kudzu Lamp, 2025. I had a lot of fun figuring out all the details on this lamp — from carefully painting leaf veins with a lightbox so they stand out when backlit, to gutting kudzu vines to make bark sleeves that hide welded armatures, to experimenting with rusted patinas after destroying a perfectly good lamp. By this point in the series, I felt fully in the flow of the materials. On view in ā€˜Hypernatural’ at @randcompanynyc 82 Franklin St. through January 9.
