Meet Roberto! 🫶 @hopehorizonepa
For 18 years, Roberto has been a pillar of the Hope Horizon community in East Palo Alto and Roberto has seen both his children and grandchildren participate in Hope Horizon’s programs. Roberto remembers days when his daughter didn’t want to join Hope Horizon programming, “She didn’t want to come because I was making her do it. But now that her kids are here, she sees the impact that we’re having on youth. Even if she didn’t see the impact for herself when she was here.”
While much has changed in the community, over 18 years, Hope Horizon’s work has not. Roberto said, “We have spiritual programs for middle school and high school youth... and the love and affection in the way they build their own community goes a long way. The program leaders lending an ear to listen to some of our kids, they go through situations at home that we’re not even aware of.”
Hope Horizon’s impact is holistic, spanning academic, spiritual, and emotional support. Roberto recalled, “Once, there was a young teenager having issues at home, there was crime in the family, and she lost both of her brothers. At first, she was having problems where she was depressed, didn’t want to talk to or open up to anybody, but inside she was screaming for help. Over time, she started opening up to our staff, and even though she lived through a situation she won’t be able to forget, our team eventually helped her move on. Last time I heard, she graduated high school and moved out to the East Coast. We do see her on social media sometimes. She’s doing good.”

Meet Momo! 🫶 @cyinyc
Momo has been an avid participant in CYI’s programs since she was in 8th grade! From Chinatown Beautification Day (CBD), to Chinatown Literacy Project (CLP), and Summer Leadership Institute (SLI), Momo has actively nurtured her passion for community. Momo said, “There is a huge part about CYI that has helped me grow a community so I feel less isolated, less alone. And I also get to build my leadership skills to face the real world as I grow up.”
In addition to learning lifelong skills, youth can participate in CYI’s various programs while building community along the way. Momo reflected, “I have actually met a lot of my close friends through CYI, and these are people I met in the various programs. The way I see it, once you do one program [with CYI] you really can’t stop.”

Meet Brenda! 🫶 @harbor_house_oakland
Now a freshman in college, Brenda started attending Harbor House’s after-school program in kindergarten. When she later met Kacie, Harbor House’s Executive Director, Brenda made a strong first impression as the 2nd grader who volunteered to help other kids in the program check out books from the library. Year after year, over the past 13 years, Brenda has grown into a leader at Harbor House, eventually helping lead the summer camp she once attended as a child, before heading off to college last fall. Kacie says, “There were times, especially in middle school, when life was really dark for Brenda. But she overcame those hard times and is stronger, more resilient, and more compassionate because of them.”

Meet Brandon! 🫶 @mekongnyc_
As a youth organizer at Mekong, Brandon has spent his summers supporting the community since he was 13 years old. Brandon credits Mekong with helping him break through shyness and appreciate his culture. Brandon says, “I feel like Mekong has been a reawakening for me. It really brought me back to seeing all the things I love with my culture. I came here at first during the summer for the pay, but now I’m just like, this is so empowering and involves so much more. I love being here. I love helping out my community members.”

Before NBA All-Star Weekend, I got to visit @asianyouthcenterorg and some of the youth they serve in the San Gabriel Valley.
Did you know that the SGV has more than one third of Los Angeles County’s Asian American population and has an AAPI population that is larger than 42 states? Despite the area’s economic diversity, 1/3 of the AAPI population in the SGV is low income. Unfortunately because of the model minority myth and the general belief that Asian American communities are fine - organizations like Asian Youth Center often don’t get the type of mainstream funding that other organizations receive.
In spite of these challenges, we got to see so much of the amazing work AYC is doing - from feeding communities that have been frightened from leaving their homes, to implementing youth programs that support youth in their cultural identity and empowerment.
I got to visit three schools and got asked some amazing questions - like how do I balance multiple priorities as a professional athlete, and whether I ever wanted to give up? It was awesome to share with the kids about the importance of the process of failing, and not just about always having to achieve a certain result. When I shared with the elementary school students about being embarrassed by my Asian lunches as a kid, they were so surprised - they have no shame at how good their potstickers and dumplings are! At San Gabriel High, I was so inspired to meet Dream Center staff and K, who is an amazing student leader. I was struck by how much work the students had put into protesting hate against their communities and educating their parents on how to support their communities.
All in all, an amazing visit. Thanks to AYC team, Michelle, Christine, Cindy, Anastasia, Jessi, and Michael for spending the afternoon with us and showing us around the SGV!
Tonight was really special. Huge thanks to everyone who came out to the @homecourtfilm screening at the @jamuseum .
Great to see some of the Home Court team in person. Big shoutout to director @docuchick , producers @bewilderfilm and @brandonvsoun , @ino613 , and @stephaniesunata .
Also glad @jaymekiyomurachan could make it over right after coaching and coming off a W, and it meant a lot seeing @ashleyycheaa family there as well.
I was also really grateful to share the panel with @lisalingstagram , @tadashinakamurafilms , Erica, Jenn, ad Coach Jayme. Always appreciate the chance to learn from and reflect alongside people who care deeply about the stories we’re telling.
Thank you to @taaforg and @normanlschen for partnering on this and helping make the night happen. It was great to share more about the work we’re doing at @jlinfoundation and invite community partners into the space. Nights like this are a reminder of how powerful storytelling can be when it brings people together.
Last year, our Founder and our Executive Director sat down for an interview with Ade Adeniji for Inside Philanthropy.
