Introducing . . . Angel Yard! The gates are open at our newest affordable workspace scheme in Enfield, featured on @dezeen this week. It's our latest piece in the puzzle for Fore Street, Edmonton for @enfieldcouncil . We retro-fitted and extended 32 disused garages to create warm, inspiring workspaces which will be available to local young enterprises while the surrounding Estate is transformed.

Our Spark Lab project has been shortlisted for the NLA 2022 awards in the Meanwhile category, the Community Prize and Wellbeing Prize!
The project comprises two interventions Spark Lab and Wilderness Street. Wilderness Street is a temporary living landscape, which opened on Oakfield Road in June this year. Oakfield Road was identified as a key artery that binds together Ilford’s most important cultural venues and the high street.

Next up for a week long feature will be Sayer St. + the Meadow. This one was a true collaboration with @bd_landscape , @mgrubbstudio , @engineers_hrw , @rawls_co & phd modular access. Back in January 2019 we were set the unusual challenge to design 1/2 a high street. In the end this took the form of playful and colourful linear folly set in a bio-diverse landscape which looks to encompass the social aspects of some of London's best loved public spaces. A very bold brief set by @lendlease . We will try and take you through how we got there. (📷 @jackhobhouse )

We are looking for a Part 2 assistant or a Part 1 assistant returning to uni in 2027 to join our team in London. ⭐
At JKA you will join a supportive and purposeful team, have the opportunity to take on responsibility and work with communities on extraordinary projects to transform neighbourhoods.
We are looking for a confident designer with fluency in digital and hand drawing. Written and oral communication skills are paramount, and you need to enjoy working with clients, stakeholders, consultants, fabricators and collaborators and show initiative and commitment to your work.
This is an exceptionally exciting position providing you with an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution whilst setting a challenging framework for personal and professional development. Our projects are fast paced and often present a good learning opportunity for anyone wanting to work towards their part 3 qualification.
We value the benefits of a diverse team and encourage people from a background that is under-represented in architecture to apply.
Send your CV, portfolio and cover letter including your notice period/earliest proposed start date to [email protected] (8mb file size max.) or by post to Jan Kattein Architects, 277 New North Road, London N1 7AA. You will need to have the right to work in the UK to apply.
We will evaluate applications on an ongoing basis, and the recruitment process will remain live until we have found the right candidate.
A new 'home from home' for care experienced young people in Camden! 🍊🍋
We're delighted that @wemakecamden has given planning permission to convert the old Pancras Cemetery Lodge into a new Care Experienced Hub. The building will provide spaces to seek advice, company and support for young adults who grew up in the care of the Council, supporting them to build an independent future.
The design principles for the building were defined in workshops with the young adults who will be using the building. A series of bright and colourful spaces, a new garden room and a sheltered courtyard will serve as a ‘home from home’, returning the quirky listed building to what it’s best at: being a home.
🌟 The @ribajournal MacEwen Award longlist was revealed recently and 2 of our projects are on it! 🌟
They are, the Dialogue Express cafe, a new space housed in a converted railway carriage nurturing dialogue between d/Deaf and hearing Londoners and Art Park, a new creative campus in Harrow providing work and event space for micro entrepreneurs and young people whilst forwarding town centre diversification.
The MacEwen Award has become a widely recognised benchmark for the most impactful projects addressing community need in the UK. It feels very special to be on the list. And we are in great company too.
Congratulations to everyone else who made the longlist and to our clients, friends and collaborators who have made these two projects a reality.
Art Park is also a finalist in the 'Community Space' category in the @thepineapplesuk awards. 🍍

Art Park Harrow is a Pineapple Awards Finalist! 🍍
@thepineapplesuk@festivalofplace
The Pineapple Awards have been establishing themselves as an authoritative benchmark for architecture and town planning projects that have an impact on the lives of communities and the health of neighbourhoods.
Art Park is a temporary creative workspace and cultural campus in Harrow created by JKA and @meanwhile_space . The precinct provides 14 genuinely de-mountable, self-contained affordable workspace units of various sizes and 6 micro exhibition spaces distributed across 3 small buildings that frame a triangular courtyard.
The project responds to a need for affordable enterprise and cultural space and helps to diversify the existing town centre with a focus on cultural, social and enterprise opportunities for young people and recent graduates living locally.
The site, a Council-owned car park represents a deliberate attempt to reverse an engrained car culture in Harrow, visibly demonstrating alternative, socially and environmentally sustainable uses for the site.
As a meanwhile project, Art Park capitalises on a window in the development pipeline to deliver environmental, social and economic value where long-term development plans are yet to materialise.
The decline of commercial activity in town centres has left a gap which Art Park is filling through creative activation and civic purpose in a highly accessible location. Shared open spaces and regular communal events provide opportunities to discover meet and participate.
To achieve the project objectives, and account for an untested project program in this part of London, honest collaboration was needed between the design team, the operator, the client team and the local community. Congratulations to all who made it happen!
We are delighted that @officialthanetcouncil approved our planning application for a new cafe, community space and wc + and shower facilities at Walpole Bay near Margate. 🌊🏊♂️
Cllr Ruth Duckworth, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Growth at Thanet District Council, said: “I am delighted that the Planning Committee has approved these much-needed facilities for Walpole Bay. By delivering a new café, community space, and accessible toilets, we are enhancing the experience for locals and visitors alike while respecting the unique character of Hodges Gap." “This development is a fabulous investment in our coastline that balances modern amenities with the preservation of our natural environment.” Congratulations to all involved.

Obligatory festive post incoming! 🚨
Did you know that we have a shop? As a shopowner you have responsibility. A shopfront on the high street makes you a contributor to public life. We take that responsibility very seriously. We regularly field enquiries from passers-bye, accept parcels from residents and businesses along the high street and we maintain a changing display of architectural models, books, posters and samples throughout the year.
The highlight is our Christmas display which is slowly but surely making us famous in our local neighbourhood. For 10 years, we have been running an internal Christmas decorations competition. We now have a collection of over 100 decorations that are like no other. Some of the favourites from over the years include Anna M’s mechanical Christmas fairy whose moving cardboard arms forge Christmas presents as you turn a serrated dial; Gareth M’s musical bauble providing instant QR coded access to Christmas tunes; Corina T’s origami Christmas lights; Chandni P’s Philip S. lightbulb cum snowman; Alastair J’s miniature Christmas Street Sign modelled on our recently completed Chalton Street Sign; Gabriel W’s flat pack travel bauble; Chrysanthe S’s illuminated cookie mould Christmas star; Jasmin Y’s JKA themed nativity scene and Rosie P’s burek Christmas tree made from collated photographs of our favourite lunch from local café Cooks + Books. Winner this year was Thomas B, playing fast and loose with scale, in his miniature of our kitchen sink complete with microscopic fairy bottle and scouring sponge. Last but certainly not least, taking pride of place in the window this year, are Kirsty M’s Chry-Santa and Jan-ta Claus paper mâché dolls!
The winner is selected in a democratic process through secret ballot with one vote per team member. There are no hard and fast rules for the competition, although over the years four parameters define most of the winning entries: inventive use of found and reclaimed materials, practicality, good craftspersonship and a considered spatial composition. Practice what you preach, one might say.
A magic Christmas to everyone who’s celebrating and lovely holidays to everyone else. 🎄
Have you heard the proverb 'The Proof is in the Pudding'? 🍮
As the year draws to a close and we reflect on the projects we've completed this year and those we can't wait to see progress next year, Jan's Christmas newsletter draws out the parallels between pudding and city making. Link below.
