A very happy book birthday to @jesserbest and You Pierce My Soul! 💃 This was one of the last books I edited at Quirk, and it is everything to me: a sapphic dystopian YA packed with heart and hope, a defiant song against algorithms, book banning, and being told how to live and how to be. I have so loved getting to work with Jessica Mary Best (who writes snappy banter and whips up in-universe songs like no one else), and I can't recommend You Pierce My Soul enough.
But you don't have to take my very biased word for it! School Library Journal deems it "a must-have due to the complex plot, fantastic writing, and queer representation" in its starred (!!) review and Kirkus calls it an "exciting, socially relevant tale." Plus it comes recommended by some wonderful authors who I know you love: @natalienaudus , @rosieethor , @jmillwrites , @readthenfall , and @miss_alicelin .

throwback to this poster for an arts festival that i saw in taipei 🔥🔥🔥 reminder of why genAI sucks, ethically speaking
1) it's built on stolen, plagiarized creative work
2) it wastes tons of water and energy
3) it is driving up electricity prices and creating pollution for communities living near new data centers, and many of the people affected are Black and brown folks...
4) it depends on large scale content moderation done by exploited workers in other countries
5) it's contributing to the aesthetics and manufacturing of fascism (fake news, grotesque social media memes, etc, not to mention other forms of AI being used for surveillance and war)
6) it's an unregulated nightmare that has been linked to documented instances of harm (like AI psychosis)
7) scientific studies have shown that it can be damaging to people's critical thinking skills
8) one time this woman at a party made cupcakes and i ate one and it was very weird and bad, but i politely said nice things about it, and then the cupcake baker revealed that she used chatGPT to bake it, and then when the recipe went wrong, she asked chatGPT to fix it...
9) another time, some guy tried to suggest that i use AI to write cover copy and sell sheets, and i was so shocked that all i could say was "no.... no i'm not sure that would be better"
