Here are some pics from the first 4 months of 2026. What you won’t see here is the tears and fears and so much frustration and loss. Having your picture taken by 🧊 and being added to watch lists. People you love being beaten for caring about humanity. Communities and families being ripped apart. Your own family lost along the way. Daily devastation over cruel laws and unnecessary wars and horrific genocides. On the hard days, we lean on hope and community. We reassess where we can be helpful and who to hold close. We stand up for our neighbors and fight back against those who seek to harm and oppress. We give countless hours to something greater than ourselves. And above all, we love. 💛

Update: GIVEAWAY CLOSED. Will draw winners on 1/25 (Sunday). Update: If we raise $1,500, I’ll throw in a $50 gift card to a Twin Cities indie bookstore of choice to a second winner. Minnesota continues to see an alarming rise in brutal, illegal actions by 🧊 and DHS agents, impacting the Twin Cities and entire state. BIPOC communities feel unsafe leaving their homes for any reason. We’re rattled and devastated and, more importantly, determined to protect and support our neighbors. This is where you can help. @maryeroachauthor has organized a fundraiser to support @communityaidnetworkmn , an incredible group that I’ve been fortunate to support in the past and is very dear to me. All proceeds will help benefit vulnerable families in MN. To help raise funds, I’m offering a prize package featuring items from 4 local indie bookstores: @moonpalacebooks , @nextchapterbooksellers , @blackgarnetbooks , and @tropesandtrifles . These stores have done a lot for the community in recent weeks (and always), as have so many other area indies. The raffle winner will receive a Moon Palace Books tote bag, $25 gift card to Next Chapter Books, Tropes & Trifles candle, BLUFF by @danez_smif (a local auto-buy poet), stickers, and pins. TO ENTER: 💛 Donate to CANMN January 20–23 💛 DM a screen shot of receipt to me, @jmillwrites 💛 Every $5 donated gets you one entry 💛 US only, please The winner will be selected on Saturday, January 24. Thank you in advance for your support! We keep us safe. #minneapolis #minnesota #canmn #fundraise bookstagram

I’m heartbroken for Renee Good and Keith Porter and everyone who’s been killed or harmed by ICE and this fascist regime. Being in community has given me hope, but knowing how close to home this hate runs makes me sick. Someone shared a post about Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police’s response to Renee’s murder on their Instagram and elsewhere. I don’t talk about this publicly, but my dad is heavily involved in MN FOP. We used to have good discussions despite our differences, but he refuses to talk about anything police related with me ever since George Floyd because he knows how I feel. But I’m not staying quiet. Instead, I wrote a poem for him. Title: Title: Father, I’m disappointed Did you see what I saw? She wasn’t mad at him, the wheels were turned away. Did you see what I saw? His gun was out and ready, his rage on full display. Father, I’m disappointed. You say we scramble for sound bites. You say we ignore due process. You say we condemn and vilify. I say we Noem when we see them. I say we’ve been here before. I say look in the mirror. Father, I’m disappointed. Kidnapping from cars and homes and jobs and churches and shops and restaurants and hearings and appointments and schools and daycares and parks and sidewalks and and and Who do you really serve and protect? What will you say when the dust settles? When will you wake up to reality? Where’s the warrant and due process now? Why do laws cease to matter when it’s you on our necks? How can you live with yourself? Father, I’m disappointed. Young naivety earned your love, my complacency kept us safe. Law and order trumps family, it’s been there all along. I’m a threat to the regime now — the same kind of woman as her. This is my community, my home. Would you let them take me, too? Is humanity enough to justify a gun? Had it been me, would you have listened? Would your eyes opened to the truth? Would you see things for what they are? I could be next. It’s not too late. It’s not too late. It’s not too— Father, I’m disappointed. #poetry #poem #abolishice #reneegood #minneapolis

My dear Grandma Angie left this life on Monday morning at the age of 91. She was full of kindness, humor, sass, and love, and she will be incredibly missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. Rest easy, little nugget. I hope your next journey has fabulous wigs and strawberry cookies. 💛

November was filled with family, friends, and dog snuggles. My niece is somehow already 2, Austen somehow already (almost) 6 months, and we’re somehow already gearing up for Christmas. I have edits to get back to my agent, books to read, and winter to enjoy. Hope everyone takes care of themselves as we wrap up a challenging year and finds joy whenever possible. 💛💛

The world is a dark, scary place, but having the love of friends and strength of community makes it a little brighter. October was one for the books. 💛

30 days of Austen Jane, lovingly nicknamed the Demon. She still loves her vent when the air is on, and I’m sad for it to turn off for the year soon. She’s the friendliest dog and likes to sit and watch the kids play outside and jump for joy when anyone approaches her. She’s made friends with a few neighborhood dogs, and the roaming neighbor cat is not impressed. We’re halfway through puppy socialization class, and she’s picking things up great as long as the other puppies aren’t distracting her (aka her training goes much better at home). Walks around the neighborhood are her favorite, and she loves making me wait so she can obsess over certain grass patches and cracks in the sidewalk. We’re still working on biting, leash tugging, stealing Izzy’s toys, and eating Izzy’s food, but she’s come a long way in our first month together. I can’t wait to keep watching her learn and grow. #puppy #puppiesofinstagram #wheatie #wheatiesofig #softcoatedwheatenterrier #dogsofinstagram #puppygram

Welcome home, Austen! Baby girl is 9 weeks old today and loves eating grass, laying over the cool vent air, and giving kisses. She’s a soft-coated wheaten terrier. I’m beyond thrilled to finally be a dog parent. Thank you so much to @cocosheartdogrescue for helping me give her a loving home. 💛💛 #adopt #gotchaday #puppy #softcoatedwheatenterrier #wheatie #puppiesofinstagram
