A lovely bit of good news was waiting in my inbox at the end of today's hike: a starred review for THE BOOK OF JUPITER, from Booklist!!! And it includes a comparison to THE GIVER- a book I've loved for many years. Huge thanks to @ala_booklist for helping my newest book find its way to more young readers ❤️
42 days until THE BOOK OF JUPITER comes out! And since I'm going to spend most of them hiking on the UK coast, I thought I should do a little book promo in the few days remaining before I leave! So here's a lovely review from School Library Journal. You can pre-order my book now- and if it sounds like your kind of book, please do!
THE BOOK OF JUPITER is my first middle grade novel in a decade, and I cannot even express how excited I am about it. It's about a 13-year-old girl who has been raised never to ask questions- and what happens when she does. I love this character and her courage, and I hope you will too.
A few photos from yesterday's walk: the smallest library ever, some spectacular views from windy cliff tops...and Dartmoor ponies!!! I love how we can see the path snaking along the coast ahead of us, and turn and look back and see where we've come from. And I love arriving in a new town on foot! Look how pretty Mevagissey's harbor is!
A shorter walk today, from Falmouth to Portscatho, but it included two small ferries, a castle, a 12th century church, spectacular views, and a whole lot of blister prevention tape holding my feet together! And it ended with a blissful soak in a bathtub, and a really lovely bit of good news in my inbox...which will get its own post 😉
A few photos from our last couple of days, hiking from Coverack to Falmouth. (The orange circle in the second picture is at the little ferry dock at Helford- you flip the circle open to let the ferry operator know you would like them to come pick you up!) We had a rest day today, exploring Falmouth: walking around Pendennis Point, checking out the book stores, checking out the maritime museum, and stopping for pizza and cider and a game of Scrabble. My feet definitely appreciated the break from the hiking boots. Tomorrow we will be walking again, back on the beautiful South West Coast Path.
Day 8 of our hike in Cornwall took us from the Lizard to Coverack. Here's a glimpse of this stretch of the South West Coast Path- endlessly up and down- and the beautiful little harbor in the town we are spending tonight in. Tomorrow, our group of four parts ways, and C and I continue on this hike on our own- we will miss Anne and Cindy so much! We've had such a great time together.
Another spectacular day, another 20 km of beautiful coastline... which took us about seven hours- plus lunch and snack breaks- because much of it was so rocky and steep! And along cliffs! Have I mentioned that I don't like heights? We were very happy to finally get to Penzance, hang up our hiking poles, and eat dinner in a 13th century pub!
Today's hike started with heavy rain in St Just, took us to Lands End, and up and down steep hills (so many steep hills omg) and into brilliant sunshine...and along clifftops with breathtaking views, and sand dunes, and beaches... and ended with a concert with an Irish band (Ranigri) at the 100 year old Minnack theater, looking out over the sea, where three seals poked their heads up to listen! Over 7 hours hiking and I'm sooooo tired- but what a magical day.
Another spectacular day of walking on the South West Coast Path. Unbelievably beautiful- stunning coast line and wild flowers and towering cliffs and turquoise water far down below. We walked about 20 km, from Zennor to St Just- some tricky rocky and boggy bits, and about 700 meters of elevation. (The new knee brace is fantastic and I'm sooo grateful to have it!!).
First day of our coastal walk began in St Ives. where @great_bigc and I ended our hike two years ago. We walked from St Ives to Zennor today...not a long hike, but the boulder-strewn landscape made it slow going! Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful- I feel so lucky to be back in this magical corner of the world, and to be sharing the experience with our friends Anne and Cindy.
