Durham Wharf is a live / work space for artists nearing completion in Hammersmith, London. @assembleofficial worked closely with @granbyworkshop and @localworkstudio developing the various facades of the building. The white encaustic tiles are made from approximately 70% recycled clay, and the various lime-based renders include crushed demolition waste gathered during the first few months of the project. The site itself was established 150 years ago as a coal wharf, and remains one of the few examples of the unique industrial past of this particular stretch of the River Thames. The development, formally a large rendered shed, hints toward this legacy as it turns the page on a new chapter for the wharf.

A lot of people ask us why we don’t record our talks. Talks at the Lane is very much a live experience. We want to be your hosts when we hold a talk - we know who is coming, we move amongst the audience We want to welcome you into a warm and cosy space – low ceilings, informal seating, atmospheric lighting We want to share some great food with you - pass some bread, turn to the person beside you, eye contact leads to a conversation. We want you to be relaxed, be engaged, feel comfortable enough to ask questions and be curious. We want you to be present.  It’s the connections that make us. Some photos of the second talk of our third season - exploring how a sensitive, community-first approach to land management and ownership can shape sustainable and democratic food systems. Thank you all who came and contributed to our discussion. Our guests: @evielovesnature from @earth_in_common @ellamushen from @thefreecompanysco @jamesassembles of @commontreasures__ TATL Team: Jess, Emily, Laura, Natasha, Paula and Zoe. What is the role of creativity: thinking solutions. Key to this development is a fresh consideration of materials combined with the power of creativity and imagination. Introducing one of our guest speakers to discuss this topic at ‘Living in a Material World – Art, Making and the Environment’ James Binning, co-founder of architecture and art collective Assemble. James will introduce his work at Assemble as well as a new project, Common Treasures, an organisation dedicated to creating and implementing practical tools and processes that enable and empower communities to realise better shared outcomes for rural places and the people that live and work in them. ‘Living in a Material World – Art, Making and the Environment’ is on Saturday 14 June at Messums West, Tisbury, Wiltshire. Link in bio to find out more about our guest speakers and to book tickets. @jamesassembles @assembleofficial #materials #creativity #messumswest #discussions #sustainability @commontreasures_

♻️ The Circularity issue is here! In Mallorca, H Arquitectes have turned sandstone from an existing building into nougat-like blocks while in the south of France, rice straw and sunflower stems make new building materials at @luma_arles . Whole components are integrated into fantastical concoctions in the work of Marcel Raymackers and transplanted across borders to relieve housing shortages in Ukraine. In Copenhagen and Hangzhou, entire buildings are transformed and reused. But circular design principles fit awkwardly into linear capitalist production processes. As Michaël Ghyoot and Tom Schoonjans of @rotor_brussels write in the keynote, ‘The current capitalist configuration simply does not tolerate curbing exploitation.’  AR May 2025 features projects by @pihlmann , @harquitectes , @urko_sanchez_architects , @bcarchitectsandstudies , @assembleofficial , Atelier Luma, Laurie Baker, @bovenbouw.architectuur , @bauburoinsitu , @jiakunarchitects and TLS Landscape Architecture, with writing by, @manon.mollard , Christophe Van Gerrewey, @eabeaumont , @mortenbirk_architecture , @kristinarapacki , Adam Przywara and more.  Pick up your copy by tapping the shop icon in this post, and read the full editorial and keynote essays at the link in our bio
