Though quaint and undeniably heritage in appearance, this facade belies an ultra-contemporary extension at its rear - just as the owners intended.⁠⁠Setting eyes upon this gorgeous home in Sydney's inner west, Rob and Katrina Freeman were instantly enamored by its period charm. Not wanting to attempt to "copy" its original features, the pair settled on a thoughtful restoration and the addition of something new. It was seven years ago that a couple bought this early 1980s clinker-brick bungalow. The bold use of colour and pattern has made this renovated 1940s Melbourne home ‘pure joy’.It was a big job, and interior designer Nina Hendler of NY Design worked on the joinery and fixtures and finishes, in addition to reviewing the building designer’s floor plans where necessary. When it came to the furnishings and decorative elements, Nina admits it took a while for everyone to get in sync.“I mainly work on more monochromatic and pared-back projects, and they were sending me totally out-there inspiration,” says Nina. “I took a pause, then just ran with it.
