You should never speak with your heroes, they say⊠yet here we are, sending a message into the ether asking Simon Day for the five albums he canât live without.
He did not disappoint.
For a certain generation, Ratcat were/are. A. Very. Big. Deal.
@ratcatofficial were on top of the world â and the charts â at the turn of the â90s. With that irresistible soft/loud alchemy of garage rock grit and sugar-rush melody, the Sydney trio didnât just arrive, they detonated. The Tingles EP hit number one in 1990, powered by âThat Ainât Badâ, a song that felt like it had always existed â all jangle, fuzz, and teenage electricity â somehow both scrappy and undeniable.
And then came Blind Love in June 1991.
A record so big it didnât just top the charts â it held them hostage. Simultaneous number one album and single. Outselling releases from Michael Jackson, INXS, Crowded House, Lenny Kravitz, Bette Midler⊠the lot of them.
And just to twist the knife in the side of typical pop music â the Tingles EP from the year before finished 1991 at number two on the singles chart, second only to Bryan Adamsâ â(Everything I Do) I Do It For Youâ.
Let that sink in. This wasnât just a moment â it was a takeover.
Their influence spreads wide â
@richardkingsmill himself has pointed to them as a key spark, arguably more so than Nirvana, in shifting what Australian radio sounded like in the early â90s.
And as a small, almost poetic full-circle moment: Simonâs influence doesnât just live in the past. In more recent years, he co-wrote with
@isabellamanfredi for
@thepreatures â a band that carried that same sharp, melodic instinct into a new era.
@janegazzo named her 2022 compilation (and our Nov 2023 ROTM) Blind Love and placed Ratcatâs âThat Ainât Badâ at track one, side one. Exactly where it belongs.
And in this very column?
@benleemusic once named Tingles as one he couldnât live without.
The line runs both ways.
Influence in. Influence out.
This is Simon Dayâs Forever Five.
