on 'happiness' among Sight & Sound’s best video essays of 2025. "A quintessentially 2025 video essay." Kevin B. Lee "How to carry the weight of the world’s pain when it’s constantly live-broadcast to our screens; no one can sleep until everyone is free." Mathieu Janssen "What an effective, amazing work about the mediality of the Palestinian genocide, a meditation on what it truly means to witness a live-streamed genocide, amongst other apps and enormous quantities of digital debris – both grave and, at times, incredibly funny in its use of (self-effacing) dark humour." On the second anniversary of the student encampments against the genocide in Palestine committed by Israel, we are organizing several film screenings with side events in the Netherlands. Filmed during the May 2024 student encampments and subsequent actions, "Class Outside" is a collective documentary that captures everyday moments of resistance, solidarity, and clashes, exploring a landscape filled with bodies, slogans, cobblestones, and dreams. The events will happen throughout May. Apart from film screenings, readings, and conversations, on Saturday, May 23rd, the filmmakers @aylinkuryel , @firatyucels and Deniz Buga will organize a film editing workshop at De Appel. 🎙 Introducing: Fırat Yücel & Aylin Kuryel 🎬 Fırat Yücel and Aylin Kuryel are the Amsterdam-based duo behind @imageacts , a collective working at the intersection of documentary filmmaking, activism, and image politics. 🎞️ Fırat is a documentary director whose work explores collective filmmaking and resistance against censorship through video essay, archival/found footage, and desktop documentary. His anthology film 𝘚𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘜𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯: 𝘈𝘯 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘰𝘧 (𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘰)𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 premiered at IFFR and screened at MoMA and CPH:DOX. 🎓 Aylin is Assistant Professor in Literary and Cultural Analysis at UvA, where her research spans image politics, nationalism, and the politics of emotions. She’s also a documentary filmmaker in her own right. 👁️ At The Hmm, they’ll be bringing their practice into conversation with the new orality as a critical framework – asking what it means to make and circulate images when the media environment is increasingly breakneck and algorithmically driven. 🔖 Their current favourite corner of the internet is Spot Basın Kooperatifi, a Turkish meeting platform for independent journalists with a YouTube channel worth falling into. 📅 Sat 16 May 2026 🕗 13.30–18.00 CEST 📍@tolhuistuin and our custom livestream ♿ Accessibility info on event page (link in bio) 🎟 Tickets: €7.50 to €27.50. Join us on the 6th of May for 𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙊𝙪𝙩𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 – a film by @aylinkuryel , @firatyucels and Deniz Buga that documented the Amsterdam student’s refusal of accepting complicity and the statues quo within Western universities in times of broadcasted genocide. This filmscreening is part of 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 🌹 hosted by @iliadacharalambous in collaboration with @hetrodekeukentje and includes a collective reading with @spookstad.boo , centered on the publication Between Palestine and Us. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺: In 2024, Amsterdam became one of many cities where people mobilized against the systematic destruction of Palestinian lives and infrastructures. In the midst of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, students and staff organized encampments, teach-ins, and demonstrations, calling on the University of Amsterdam and other institutions to sever ties with Israeli entities. 𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙊𝙪𝙩𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 is a collective video diary emerging from this moment. Filmed during the May 2024 student encampments and subsequent actions, it captures everyday moments of resistance, solidarity, and clashes, exploring a landscape filled with bodies, slogans, cobblestones, and dreams.  All proceeds of the dinner will go towards supporting 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 in Nablus, Palestine; a grassroots organization doing crucial mutual aid work: creating safe spaces for kids & youth through tech clubs, theatre, football, and providing direct aid (food baskets) to families under occupation. Please do help us share the info about the fundraiser and get in contact with us for organising fundraising events together!! 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 for more information on our guests.
This event is walk-in and aside from the food, we suggest 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 of between 3-8€. The Basecamp runs on lots of passion and love, but little money. 📸 by @mateovega

Join us on May 28th for Images in Action, where we explore, through film and poetry, practices emerging from political struggle in solidarity with Palestine, here in Amsterdam. Student protests have played an important role in making anti-colonial resistance visible, a movement reflected in the two films we will watch together. We will screen Class Outside and Happiness, two films that trace how students inhabit, contest, and reclaim urban and cinematic spaces. Alongside the films, Çağlar Köseoğlu (@cglr_ksgl ) will read from his manuscript "Our love is terroristic", written for the end of this world. Followed by a conversation with the artists, moderated by @koertewaja More information and tickets via the link in bio 🫂 Still photographed by @mateovega

32. Adana Altın Koza Film Festivali’nde En İyi Uluslararası Kısa Film seçilen mutluluk, Aylin Kuryel ile Fırat Yücel’in ortaklığında sürdürülen @imageacts ’in bir ürünü. Amsterdam Üniversitesi’nde Literary and Cultural Analysis bölümünde akademisyen olarak çalışıyor. Belgesel filmler yapıyor. Fırat Yücel, Boğaziçi Üniversitesi’nde sosyoloji okurken 2001’de Altyazı Sinema Dergisi’nin kurucuları arasında yer aldı. Uzun süre Altyazı’nın genel yayın yönetmenliğini üstlendi. #fabrikaayvalık #ayvalıktiyatro #ayvalıketkinlik #ayvalıksöyleşi
