This week, Outskirts Film Podcast ventures into the catalogue of one of Turkey’s most prolific filmmakers, Atıf Yılmaz. A journeyman filmmaker to the bone, Yılmaz made more than a hundred films, ranging from melodramas and historical epics to musicals and psychological character studies. Through a selection of films that exemplify different periods and trends within his five-decade-long career, we only scratch the surface of his convoluted filmography, with numerous other films remaining to be discovered.
I’ve been trying to learn how to accept the fact that some people are born luckier than others. I just wish this realization hadn’t come to me after I got hit by a car in Taipei, of all places, but it is what it is. I don’t know if a curse somebody inflicted upon me is causing all of this, but maybe that’s just how my life is. Sometimes I look around and can’t help but feel envious of people who seem to have a harmonious relationship with their daily existence, one that remains uninterrupted, devoid of terrible surprises, and rarely marked by a sense of dissociation from reality. Bad luck is the easiest and most comforting answer I’m tempted to succumb to, but what’s more difficult is looking at things again and recognizing all the people who are valuable to me, who love me deeply, and who care about my well-being. Lately, I’ve been advised to talk less about my personal life on social media. Apparently, it’s not very beneficial for my professional career. Looking at how things are now, both mentally and physically, I’m almost sure that I won’t get very far anyway, so to hell with it. Anyway, this post is just a reminder to myself that, no matter how painful everything feels — on the body and in the body — ; no matter how dark the future and the bruises — on the body and in the body — may seem, I’m lucky to love and be loved by all of you.
One of the undeniable masters of 1980s and 1990s cinema, Taiwanese filmmaker Edward Yang has only grown in stature since premiering Yi Yi at Cannes in 2000 and his untimely death in 2007. This week on the Outskirts Film Podcast, we revisit Yang’s seven films—drifting through Taipei’s glass office towers and bustling streets, tracing lives caught between intimacy and urban alienation—and set out in search of our own path through these dazzling formal labyrinths.

New text! 🐌 “In the Bosom of Images” by Öykü Sofuoğlu on Marthe Peters’ 𝘏𝘦𝘯𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱.
“The spiral curl of Henry’s body echoes in another animal’s anatomy: the snail. Though the filmmaker doesn’t mention it directly, this comparison suggests a longing for a shell to retreat into. (...) As indolent as these snails might appear, their movements and textures across different environments—on paper, skin, or bed linens—embody resilience and persistence, traits for which the filmmaker also deserves recognition, no matter how discreet she may be about them.” — Öykü Sofuoğlu
[▶︎] 𝘏𝘦𝘯𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘎𝘪𝘳𝘭 𝘞𝘩𝘰 𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱 was part of Courtisane’s opening programme “Undercurrents 1 – Rest Assured” earlier this week (a re-run is screening tomorrow!), curated in collaboration with Marthe Peters and Leon Decock. The festival is currently running from April 1 to 5.
