Join us @idea_annenberg this Wednesday for a screening of the important film #therapeofrecytaylor followed by discussion led by professors @alisontrope @safiyanoble & #cristinavisperas. This film focuses on the resistance of Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, who was gang raped by six white men in 1944 Alabama. Common in Jim Crow South, few women spoke up in fear for their lives. Not Recy Taylor, who bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice. This film exposes a legacy of physical abuse of black women and reveals Rosa Parks’ intimate role in Recy Taylor’s story. An attempted rape against Parks was but one inspiration for her ongoing work to find justice for countless women like Taylor. The 1955 bus boycott was an end result, not a beginning. More and more women are now speaking up after rape. This film tells the story of black women who spoke up when danger was greatest; it was their noble efforts to take back their bodies that led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and movements that followed. #therapeofrecytaylor #idea_annenberg

Last week we at @idea_annenberg & @visionsandvoices hosted a visit by artist collective #whenwomendisrupt (@tlynnfaz @jessicasabogal @aboutherfilms ). Over the course of two days they visited classes, led workshops, and presented about their work and the role art can play in dismantling racism, xenophobia and patriarchy. One of the lasting highlights is a work of art they created in dialogue with students which is featured on the walls as you enter the east lobby of the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism (3502 Watt Way). Come view it when you can & hopefully it will spark reflection, critical thinking & generative discussion.
