‘The String Thing’ continues Heyse Ip and regiment’s collaborative exploration working on site specific and sound installations.
This sonic environment is in itself a machine that performs, staging for acts and actions that wish to move beyond the performer, trespassing an identifiable division of roles. For ‘The String Thing’ they have drawn inspiration from a variety of fields, from Performance Studies and Philosophy, via Musique Concrète and the Theatre of the Absurd, to industrial music.

Find a length of string and a space to string it across. Are we pulling this thing, towards or away from us? What is the limit you can push this thing you reckon? Tightly. Or not tightly? Too tight and the string might just snap and cut us. Tension makes the sound audible. Are you a good listener? Now listen, this thing requires to listen. Silence can be noisy. A string strung tightly between two point in space is already a set of sounds sitting in silence. And two strings are enough to make an ensemble. Is this thing an instrument? One may say it is almost an instrument. Is this silence, tension? Emptiness can also be tension.
Functioning as a replicator of bird sounds, both a deterrent and attractor - transforming found objects into an imaginary mechanism, the sculpture performs wagging gestures that create an imitation of bird calls.

Animoid Song, a solo exhibition by Heyse Ip, blurs the boundaries between human, animal and machine within a fictional yet eerily familiar environment. Creating a new speculative landscape, the installation utilises repurposed urban materials and artificial interventions intended to deter wildlife from the hidden and undesirable spaces within a city.

Was ist Natürlichkeit, was ist Natur?

/ What is natural, what is nature? Can we draw a line between nature and what is human-made? In komPOST #49, a philosophical text by Santiago Colombo Migliorero @santiagocolombomigliorero addresses this question, accompanied by the photo series “Nottabird” by Heyse Ip @heyseip . In the second part, paintings by Katja Moritz @moritzkatja wander into the realm of dreams – where the natural and the artificial blur together.

Heyse Ip @heyseip , an artist working across sound performance, moving image, and installation, brings a distinct sensitivity to the relationship between the human and the natural world. At the heart of his new series is a fascination with the everyday encounter between humans and flies. By focusing on these small, often vilified animals, Heyse explores the intersections between species, raising questions about identity, control, and the boundaries of humanness.

I am showing some new works that play with the resonances and architecture of glass objects, activated by the frequencies of insect fluttering combined with a composition of foley sounds - drawing on a collective memory of trapping insects as children.

In this speculative environment, the screens become detritus entangled by the netting like an animal above your head. My teeth and mouth become an unknown being, intermittently voicing bird-like calls, signalling a biological deterrent from above.

The exhibition offers layers of sensory and spatial dissonance. Amplified mechanical hums and vibrational resonances evoke the intensity of urban conditions. Large-scale bird netting partitions the space, dividing viewer and artwork. It forces the visitor to take on the role of the animal and to instinctively react to the overwhelming interventions. What appears from afar as lush, vibrant grass reveals itself to be an illusion—synthetic green bird spikes act as defensive architecture. Mechanical bird deterrents fill the air with haunting yet realistic bird sounds, while screen-based performances depict the artist’s absurd mimicry of bird calls. However, without a single bird in sight, the fabricated sounds of birds linger as a ghostly presence of ‘nature’.
Animoid Song is my new solo show, a site-specific installation @hongkongartscentre .
Thank you to the Hong Kong Arts Centre for awarding me the funding as a part of their Creators for Tomorrow open call scheme and giving me opportunity to develop some new works in their experimental gallery.
The exhibition is on till the 30th of March. Link in bio.

【年青藝術家與資深藝術家深入探索城市背景下,🏙️我們與自然關係中🌲更廣泛的含義!| An in depth conversation between young and renowned artists on the intersection of humans, animals and machines in urban life!】

Where do the boundaries between nature and humanity lie? How has humanity’s systematic control, reshaping and deterrence of the natural world created new forms of resistance? In this speculative habitat, have our deterrents ultimately led to the banishing of birds, leaving only mechanical echoes in their place? Or, has their decline left us longing for their songs once more, making us create new forms of ‘animoid’ replication?
In exhibition “Animoid Song”, we find urban materials being repurposed, and gallery space being transformed into a fictional yet eerily familiar environment. Where does the resonance in the gallery comes from? What is the moving images in screens trying to tell? This Saturday, artist Heyse Ip will break it down for you together with curator Shirky Chan and artist Alex Heung.

【大自然和人的分界在哪裡?| Where do the boundaries between nature and humanity lie?】

Animoid Song urges us to reconsider our position within the ecosystem, confronting the consequences of our interventions in the dense confines of urban life. Either way, what remains is a distorted reflection of ourselves and our actions.
