Today is my dear friend Cassidy’s birthday. It feels right that she was born on Earth Day. She carries the same mystery and magic as the natural world. She meets everyone with a sprinkle of cosmic welcome. She is full of life. Strong and soft all at once, her spirit as open and wild as the wide open spaces out West we both love.

We often come back to that photo shoot with the skull on Stella’s portale, how much fun we had and how natural it feels to create together. Over the years we’ve collaborated and supported each other. We’ve talked through everything from next moves and meaningful work to the daily questions that come with being artists and women.

This week I celebrated my friend @audreyhallphoto big birthday. It made me reflect on time, how long we've known each other, the life we've packed into those years, the way I feel like I was present during the ones before because she's such a story teller, she's such a present human being, she's so curious and courageous, she's one of a fucking kind. She has held me, talked me down, talked me up, photographed me and my girl, we've shared death and life and road trips and music videos. She always finds the joy, she always knows how to spin it so it lands on you. I am so very grateful for my friend. Do any of you have a complicated relationship with where you’re from? I signed onto #chasingsummer because it is set in my home state of Texas— and is about letting yourself be wrong about the place you grew up. And letting yourself be right. I continue to love and leave behind and grow into the ways that Texas shaped me. Even in this gorgeous existential plane known as middle age, I am still in a full body conversation with Texas.
So I am daily in recognition that Dilley Detention Center houses immigrant children in detention in Texas- and they do not receive adequate food or medical care. How to celebrate my home and also celebrate the dignity of all the lives inside my home who are treated wrongfully? In honor of these folks, I offer a donation today to @raicestexas - offering legal and social services support to immigrant families in Texas— and invite you to join me if you feel called!
What is your complex relationship to your home like??
Building intimacy is a joy of my profession, and I got to grow more intimate with our incredible cast and crew and also with Texas through this film.
