📢 Residents in Hackney Wick are fed up with abandoned hire bikes blocking pavements and creating dangerous hazards!
The Hackney Wick Town Hall community group is demanding action from @HackneyCouncil , @transportforlondon , and companies like @lime to address the public safety risk caused by carelessly discarded bikes littering walkways.
“I’m 90 years old and have to carefully navigate around hire bikes dumped on the pavement just to get to the shops,” said Trowbridge Estate resident Gordon, 90, whose video is shown here. “Something needs to be done before someone seriously gets hurt.”
Community worker Polly Mann warns: “Residents risk life and limb dodging these obstructing bikes on their way to the bus stop. If an elderly person falls and breaks a hip, it could rob them of independence.”
Residents also complained about aggressive hire bike riders using pedestrian paths, with one neighbour suffering a broken arm after being struck.
Kenton Road resident, Brian, says the hire companies must take responsibility: “The bikes are tracked, so @Lime knows exactly where they are and who left them blocking paths.”
Other London boroughs have already acted against nuisance hire bikes. Will @HackneyCouncil and @transportforlondon listen to Hackney Wick’s demands for safety on our streets?
We call upon Hackney Council and TFL to address this situation by enforcing regulations that hold Lime Bikes accountable for the proper use of their service. Pavements must remain clear and accessible for pedestrian use. 🛑
