This short documentary series traces the turbulent aftermath of reuni-fication, when East Berlin’s industries collapse overnight, investors from the West chase high-risk opportunities, and a parallel city of techno pioneers and squatters occupies abandoned factories, churches, and cinemas to test small-scale utopias. As Berlin reclaims capital status and even bids for the 2000 Olympics, conflicts escalate, the far-right targets migrants and left-wing communities, and “metropolitan dreams” are poured into concrete at Potsdamer Platz. The screening is followed by a discussion led by Güley Alagöz, an architect at TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten, and Emrah Altınok, coordinator of HOUSING STUDIO BERLIN, whose work in critical urban theory and the political economy of urbanization connects the film’s themes to today’s housing crisis & solidarity-based alternatives.
SPREEFRONT, INC. is a critical reading of Berlin’s river edge as it shifts from civic waterfront to investment frontier. Focusing on the Mitte–Kreuzberg side and the opposite bank shaped by masterplans and flagship developments, the seminar traces how top-down redevelopment turns the riverfront into a growth narrative, reorders everyday access, and quietly decides who gets to stay. Led by Güley Alagöz, an architect at TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten, the talk connects practice-based insights with concrete project logics. Alagöz will bring an unusual second lens as a singer and guitarist, attentive not only to policy and form, but also to the cultural atmospheres that these “capital-facing” urban edges produce.
