It is SCAD Heart Attack Awareness Week and it’s very likely you’re just learning what that is, in a much preferable way to how we did: Sam being strapped to a gurney and rushed to a cath lab last July. Affecting primarily healthy women ages 30–50 with no traditional risk factors, a SCAD (spontaneous coronary artery dissection) is a tear in an artery wall that blocks blood flow. It can be triggered by physical or emotional stress, which Sam had on both counts: she had had her best morning lake swim, in part to manage grief from a lost bond with nonverbal students she could not return to as an educator. To us, a heart this big truly burst at the seams. The past months of recovery have had their ups and downs but offer a renewed clarity on how we spend our time and energy, when what you care about narrows and galvanizes. Suffice it to say, our family is going to prioritize fun and happiness ❤️ But in the interest of awareness, know the signs, especially how differently they present in women, because from every perspective - time is so valuable.
Catching up on a small glimpse of the design that drops tomorrow with 1783, a staggering piece of work by @aquakultre and team. I’ll speak soon about the gatefold 2xLP and 16 page book I designed with art direction by @joolsannie and greatly featuring the photography of @re.emergingnow . Musically I can’t recommend this album enough and, to my ear, hear Curtis Mayfield, Slum Village, Common, Bobby Womack, D’Angelo — just an incredible feat from our province and an absolute pleasure to work on.
The new long player from my friends in @beautsmusic drops Oct 17 and I really enjoyed the artwork process, as layered and considered and textured and pondered as the music within, I would like to think. New brand for music / audio that I work on here in the backyard. Lately that’s tracking remote bass, guitar, drums, vocal, voiceover, plus mix and production. The album I designed with @rosecousins is out today, an artist/friend who brings a ton of vision but is so skilled a collaborator that plenty of myself is in all the outcomes as well.
