“We know more about the Moon than we do about the deep sea.”
This summer I had the opportunity to work within the Harvard Map Collection and the privilege of consulting rare maps and books with Philip Sadler, astrophysicist at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. He spoke about the influence of the Moon on ocean exploration across the centuries, the instruments that opened the cosmos to observation, and those that, by turning toward the microscopic, helped lay the foundations of ecological thought.

I’m joining @unitedartistsforclimate on the occasion of COP30 — a global campaign bringing together artists committed to the environment, initiated by @artofchange21 & @labverde .
Over the past years, my cinematic research has been rooted in an ongoing dialogue between science, ecology, and situated knowledge, exploring how these fields shape our perception of the living world and our understanding of the Earth system.
Through collaborations with researchers from both the natural and social sciences, this practice unfolds across territories affected by environmental transformations, where observation and imagination coexist. It often inhabits the porous space between scientific inquiry and vernacular knowledge, in resonance with ancient cosmogonies and mythologies that once carried a deep co-sensitivity to nature and its forces.
Science itself becomes a vector of illumination, revealing, through its instruments and narratives, new forms of attention to the living, something I enjoy exploring with the tools specific to it.

Fragment of Oceanic Crust 🌊
This basalt sample from the East Pacific Rise (10–13˚N, at depths of 2500–2800 m), carries the memory of magmatic activity at mid-ocean ridges: places where new oceanic crust is born.
A few larger crystals formed deep within a magma chamber beneath the spreading center, while countless microscopic ones emerged as the magma ascended and erupted onto the seafloor. Thank you @mshribak for your microscope @mblwoodshole

Here, the Idiacanthus atlanticus (black dragonfish) is reimagined in dialogue with the sea monsters from the ancient maps of the Harvard Map Collection.
