I’ve had the honor—and the ultimate joy—of closely following the work of Paulo Monteiro (
@paulo_monteiro_studio ) for the past ten years or so—that is, since the very beginning of my own path. Few artists have conveyed so much to me with so little—shaping, in the most essential way, my very understanding of what making art can be. So it was no small thing to organize and edit his new monographic book, and to finally publish an essay I began drafting back in 2018 and only completed last year, entitled “The Movement of the Dot in the World”.
Published by Skira (
@skira_arte ), the book offers an expansive overview of Monteiro’s oeuvre in recent years. Alongside my contribution, it features a heartfelt essay by Yann Chateigné Tytelman (
@_________yannctytelman ) and a marvelous interview conducted by Marta Papini (
@marta_papini ). Together, these texts weave biographical threads with critical insights into a body of work that now spans more than forty years. As free as it is rigorous, Monteiro’s practice is a continuous investigation—through painting, drawing, and sculpture—into the nature of movement, the thresholds of form, and the possibilities of the line as an organic, dynamic, and yet controlled, principle.
