Originally built in 1969, the building at 450 West 33rd street belied an inner structural beauty that was concealed in beige concrete with brown metal siding. This adaptive reuse project called for the removal the building’s existing façade in order to provide it with a new, updated skin to maximize visible light while still creating an energy-efficient and acoustically optimized system. The new façade surface area is over 300,000 ft2 (27,900 m2) and includes an innovative pleated curtain wall system as well as a matching flat curtain wall system. Both pleated and flat curtain wall systems utilize unitized construction methods, insulated glass with high-performance coatings, and integrated BMU tracks for maintenance. The pleat geometry is optimized with a maximum outward slope just under 15 degrees, eliminating the requirement for safety glazing and the largest pleated unitized panels are approximately 20 ft (6 m) tall and 6 ft (1.8 m) wide, ensuring ease of transportation to the site. Front also designed steel spreader bars to distribute the new facade loads to the existing structure, as the original slab edges were not designed for these loads. The spreader bards additionally allow for easier panel installation and reduce the number of post installed anchors needed for the curtain wall installation. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, presented this project with it’s Award of Excellence in Tall Building Renovation category, 2019. @manhattanwestnyc @brookfieldproperties @rexarchitecture @adamsonaai @ctbuh_hq @ctbuh_nyfl #ctbuh #nyc #manhattan #manhattanwest #architecture #facade #facadedesign #facadelovers #archdaily #architect #architecturedaily #newyorkcity #brookfield #adaptivereuse #curtainwall

Square 696 is a new riverfront retail/residential project located in Washington D.C.’s Capitol Riverfront District. The unique H-shaped design by Handel Architects opens up the space on the structure by creating terraces and courtyard spaces, as well as multiple access point to engage the public on the ground level. Front served as a Facade Consultant on this project, assisting with the Street facing façade modules, which feature a cementitious frame, spanning two floors at 10’ wide by 19’ tall, with a recessed glazed system and spandrel panel. Additionally the courtyard’s carved façade is characterized by 6’ wide unitized curtain wall with vertical extruded aluminum fins. Our work with @weissmanfredi at @yale bringing the Tsai CITY Center for Innovative Thinking to life! The 12,200-square-foot Center for Innovative Thinking establishes a beacon for university wide interdisciplinary collaboration. The center brings students from diverse disciplines together to create innovative solutions to real world problems. The program, unique to the university, is based around team workshops that allow students to bring their ideas to fruition. The building’s unique, elliptical form is centrally positioned in a courtyard of stepped orthogonal structures. Curved transparent glass walls encourage circulation through and around the center and allow the rest of the university to see and participate in ongoing work. Indoor and outdoor connections between the center and the adjacent landscape will establish this section of the campus as a new circulation route and a new home for innovation. #frontinc #facadedesign #architecture #yale

"Like the pleats in a Dior dress swaying with the movement of the body, the façade tries to capture a fleeting moment with an architecture of unexpected lightness."
