New book announcement! As queer nightlife moves from the margins to the mainstream, what have we lost – and what can we still gain? Through Club Commons: Moving Bodies to Grow Movements in Queer Nightlife & Beyond by Anjali Prashar-Savoie we meet the people reshaping nightlife from below: abolitionist security teams creating safety without police, sober raves doubling as mental health support, radical childcare at parties, worker cooperatives taking over venues, and free party crews reclaiming public space. Part cultural history, part manifesto, Club Commons is a call to protect what we’ve built and reimagine what’s still possible. Pre-order now at velocitypress.uk/shop to get your name printed in the book and receive it first in January. Out 6th February. #ClubCommonsBook #QueerNightlife #QueerCulture #AnjaliPrasharSavoie #DancefloorRevolution #VelocityPress #QueerBooks #NightlifeHistory

Absolutely delighted to be joined by @fossafossa on my @rinse.fm show tomorrow, chatting about her recently-released nonfiction debut, “Club Commons: Moving Bodies To Grow Movements In Queer Nightlife And Beyond.” It’s a brilliant book, drawing a clear and compelling line through almost a century of underground queer club culture, and connecting it seamlessly to wider radical politics. If you haven’t read it, head over to @velocitypress immediately and rectify things. And, of course, tune in at 12 noon tomorrow to hear us talking about 1940s lesbian clubs, 90s rave creches, post-revolutionary speculative histories, and loads more!

The dancefloor is not only a site of release, but one shaped by care, labour, and shared need. In our latest editorial, @fossafossa explores the intersections of food and nightlife, asking what it means to feed, and be fed, within collective spaces of music and movement. Read the full piece now on our website or at the link in our bio.

🌚full moon feeling frenetic 🌚 📚April Book Bits 📚 🌙Club Commons has been out for over a month and I’ve been so touched by anyone who has engaged with it so far - thank you endlessly Some upcoming book events: 🦋We kick off in BRIGHTON TONIGHT with @soundaffectsnight , where I’ll be joining a trio of a talks on music & subcultures 🦋Then in NEW YORK CITY (!!!) @voices_3.0 is organising this stunning event around the book, with some live sets and music as @latenitesbookclub …. NO sadly I’m NOT going to be in New York (one day// can someone get me over there asap) but im giddy at people self organising events across the pond, especially a book club I’ve admired from afar for so long 🥹 (@charlie_winn @flowerssldn is also organising some London-based group readings of the book get to touch with them to join 😭) 🦋Rounding of the month in BRISTOL with the fabulous crew @misscoteque for an intergenerational conversation with @dj_playing_out (there’s a whole chapter in the book with her). It’s in a barn and there will be a discussion followed by a dance, DJing & it was a Headfirst pick! 🪩 🐛In the cracks of these things I’ll be crawling behind the decks at @troughdance April 3rd, running DJ workshops at an adventure playground and more nightlife union + organising meetings @nightlifesolidaritynetwork (get in touch if of interest) 💪 I also joined a panel with @equityuk to discuss working conditions in nightlife - they have recently released a nightlife pay audit so get involved + build worker power to create the club commons we need 🛠️ After that I disappear for the month of may 💨 🤫but back in June for more book bits with our fave queer, rad spaces in Sheffield, south london + more - get in touch to organise something together (or invite me to dj your swamp, bathroom, bunker, sea tower, forest, squat party)🦋 completely honoured + humbled by your support for this project 🖤🦋

Anjali Prashar-Savoie's @fossafossa freshly published 'Club Commons - Moving Bodies to Grow Movements in Queer Nightlife and Beyond' landed through my door last night and I was hooked. 'As queer nightlife moves from the margins to the mainstream, what have we lost - and what can we still gain? Part cultural history, part manifesto, Club Commons explores the power of the dancefloor. A call to protect what we've built, and reimagine whats possible.' It's such a pleasure to be interviewed here regarding helping to organise the last 9 years of @thisismycultureparty and the power and potentials of it. I'm chuffed to be alongside many musical and revolutionary icons and movements, including The Specials, The Gay Liberation Front, @yveelicious and @sistermaticsound , @djritu and Club Asia, Cultural theorist Paul Gilroy, pioneering reggae dancehall DJ Dr William 'Lez' Henry', @actup_london , @rebeldykes , @bencampkin and Lo Marshall , Dani Singer and @safeonlycic , @ph_dyke and @friendsjoinersarms , @j_eden and @riposte.london and so many more! For all friends and comrades interested in protecting and transforming Queer Culture this is absolute GOLD. Order yours @velocitypress

We’re so proud to share that Club Commons: Moving Bodies to Grow Movements in Queer Nightlife & Beyond by Anjali Prashar-Savoie is officially out in the world. Yesterday felt especially full circle. Anjali returned to Goldsmiths, University of London, where she completed her MA, to give a careers-focused talk to students - reflecting on creative practice, community, and building your own path. Straight afterwards, it was on to Planet Wax for the launch party - no speeches, no panels, just DJs, friends, and collective energy. Exactly in the spirit of the book: nightlife as care, resistance, and possibility. Club Commons explores how queer communities have built worlds on the dancefloor — and why protecting those spaces means reimagining who owns them. Huge thanks to everyone who’s supported the journey so far. The book is available now at velocitypress.uk/shop and all good bookshops. #ClubCommonsBook #QueerNightlife #QueerCulture #AnjaliPrasharSavoie #velocitypress

A stack of new interviews are coming down the No Tags pipes right now, but first we return to a conversation from our sold-out event at the ICA last month. If you couldn’t make it down, or if you were there but forgot to take notes, this episode is a keeper. London-based rave researcher Anjali Prashar-Savoie set out her vision of a ‘club commons’ – a radical, positive and participatory kind of nightlife, as inspired by her research into the history of queer scenes in the UK, from lesbian sound systems with a creche on the side to George Michael-themed free parties. Before that we spend some time reporting on our New Year jollies, our seasonal “locking in” progress, and recent film-watching (Into The Abyss, Marty Supreme, The Smashing Machine). Then a conversation about the growing magnetism of Substack, a nine-year-old newsletter platform that’s suddenly having a moment with musicians and celebs. Does the Troye Sivan newsletter herald a new intimacy in fan-artist relations? Or is this just another example of Brands Saying Bae?
