For our #UnMaking Issue, writer Romi Ron Morrison (@elegantcollisions ) met with Ashley Blakeney and alexandre ali reza dorriz inside the abolitionist pod at Crenshaw Dairy Mart (@crenshawdairymart ). “We introduced prayer into this vision of what the pandemic could’ve looked like if we lived in an abolitionist imaginary,” dorriz explains. “This involved multiple projects that incorporated prayer and abolition.” Blakeney reflects, “The way we approach abolition emphasizes the ‘low and slow of it all’… There has to be room for failure and for prototyping, and these efforts also have to be resourced. We tend to dream really, really big and try something really big.” Read the full conversation at the link in our bio. 🖊️: @elegantcollisions 📷: @juh_mile

Esteban Kelly’s first political home was in anarchist collectives as a teenager. Later, he found community in the student co-ops at UC Berkeley. Today, he is the Executive Director of the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives (@usfwc ) and a voice in the solidarity economy movement. In conversation with writer @labornlove , @estebanitos reflects on abolition as daily practice, building structures that last, and how movements move like seasons. How might we steward, not own, art? In this conversation from issue 0, Camilø Álvårez, a gallerist, private consultant, and advisor, speaks with Alula Hunsen from Fortunately about creating creative spaces and fostering alternative economies that empower self-determination. They connected virtually as he was receiving packages on a farm in the Berkshires to discuss art economies and institutions. 📸: Installation views, collective selection / selective collection, curated by Camilø Álvårez, April 28 - June 16, 2023, Rivalry Projects, Buffalo, NY. As we prepare to print Issue 01, UN/MAKING, we’ll revisit a few pieces from Issue 0! 💫 “Our Good Bones” is a game of dominoes reimagined as a collective effort to create a community bank—one that aims to create a cycle of community stewardship. This project transforms domino “pips” into receptacles for collecting loose change that can be freely “deposited” and “withdrawn” by community members. Good Bones is inspired by Fei Liu’s walks around her neighborhood park in Bushwick, where she often witnessed the conviviality in claiming and reimagining public space practiced by residents who played their nightly games of dominoes by the light of a street lamp. The project builds upon Liu’s work exploring the intersections between social practice, financial redistribution, and mutual aid. 📖💜 Read the full essay on our website at www.fortunately.us.

[Call for Submissions] Partnerships, parleys, polycules—In Issue 02 of Fortunately Magazine, we explore forms of communal exchange and transfer for unprecedented times and uncertain futures. This issue probes how institutions influence our daily transactions, which range from the subtle to the explicit: a look across the room, a heated dialogue between conspirators, or the frenzy of the market. FAIR considers ways for ideas, commodities, and resources to flow from production to consumption in systems that prioritize collective well-being over accumulation through pragmatic or even deviant means. Through the lenses of art, design, and organizing, FAIR seeks to unpack pathways toward decolonized economies, care-centered models, and futuristic forms of exchange — be they relational, material, or conceptual. This issue invites contributors and readers alike to rethink how we negotiate, share, barter, and sustain in a world craving equity, imagination, and indebtedness without the exploitative debt. About Fortunately: Fortunately is a post-capitalist lifestyle magazine that explores the intersections of art, culture, and solidarity economies. As a print and digital platform, Fortunately serves as a catalyst for conversations around solidarity and cooperation, redefining the norms of lifestyle journalism. The publication is published by @ujimaboston with support from @_artcoop ⭐️ Submit through the Google Form in our bio ⭐️ Submission Deadline: March 17 ⭐️ Accepted Contribution Fees: $300+

Thinking about these ideas from @platanomics in conversation with the editors Ciera Michele Peters and Mark Hernandez @fortunatelymag 🤲 Together, they explore why artists need a #SolidarityEconomy and why solidarity economies need artists– a topic @_artcoop and our Arts and Culture working group will nurture on January 30th for ARTISTS BUILDING SOLIDARITY ECONOMY MODELS AT HOME 🗓️ Comment 🎨 to register or visit the link in @neweconomycoalition bio 🌟 ➡️ Read the rest of this conversation on fortunately.us or by clicking the link in @neweconomycoalition bio 🔗 . . . 🗣️ “Alienation is very real, thinking of what capitalism does to our spirit. Artists are necessary for doing that healing work and helping to dis-alienate people, to help heal and connect. How do we reconnect people to the land? How do we reconnect people to each other and then to themselves? How can people join our work in organizing for the solidarity economy?”

As an arts and culture publication committed to economic democracy, we are exploring methods to align our distribution strategies with this objective 🗞️ A magazine working to redefine the norms of lifestyle journalism should embody this not only in the content but also in the systems that enable its distribution. For Issue 0, we are testing three distribution methods: - Online, the magazine is sold for $20. - At fairs, the magazine is sold on a sliding scale from $10-$25. (For Ujima Members, the sliding scale is from $5-$10.) - At select institutions and spaces that align with our mission, the magazine is $Free.99. Last week, we delivered free copies in Boston to @lucyparsonscenter , a radical, nonprofit, independent bookstore and self-managed social center, and @frugalbooks , the only Black-owned bookstore in Boston, and @papercutsjp , a woman-owned indie bookstore in Jamaica Plain, as well as @mitlistarts . Next week, we’ll be delivering free copies to @faro__cafe and @comfortkitchenbos ! We plan to continue experimenting with our distribution models for Issue 1, which is scheduled for release this fall. If you have questions about these models, or know of other organizations we should partner with, we’d love to hear from you.
