Our economic system has a history we donât always talk about.
The United States didnât begin as a democracy, it started as a business project.
From early on, systems of debt and finance were used to shape behavior, enforce power, and define who had access and who didnât.
Those legacies didnât disappear. Modern finance is still deeply connected to histories of colonialism, slavery, and racial capitalism.
So what does it mean to build a different economy? One rooted in solidarity? đą

âSolidarity is the closest expression of love that I have ever felt with my fellow man no matter where I go.â - @hasandpiker đ
Hasan talks about how solidarity fuels revolutionary optimism - and that same energy applies to how we organize our economy.
Solidarity economy isnât just theory. Itâs worker cooperatives, mutual aid networks, community land trusts, and economic systems built on care instead of competition. Itâs people choosing collective liberation over individual profit.
(And yes, Hasan gets itâhis media company is literally a co-op đ¤)

â Examples of solidarity economy in action
When we extend solidarity beyond direct action and into the economic, we create systems where everyone can thrive. Thatâs the love that changes everything at the root cause of deadly systems.

This past weekend we completed an experiment â¨
We wanted to test if we could build community online, deliver relevant content (and provide stipends) to artists about radical political economy and the role of art in COMMODITY, COMMAND, and COMMUNAL economies, collaborate with new partners like @_artcoop and @neweconomycoalition , hear from folks actually applying this framework in their culture work and advocacy like @theconsciouscitizens , @efffjavier & @transverse.coop , and keep growing our capacity to deliver this type of popular education more regularly!
Weâre thrilled to say: yes, we can. We learned SO much. And we canât wait to see whatâs in store for 2026.
Thank you to the 40 artists & culture workers who joined our closed weekend series and the over 100 artists who attended the adjacent EAT Public Talk Back Series! And huge thanks to our co-facilitators @plantmama.radical and @plantmama.radical for holding the space and delivering the curriculum.

Sad to miss "Thanksgiving" but it was a dream come true to present at @DevEcoAfr IDEAS - African Network (IDAN) conference this past week in Dakar, Senegal.
Ever since I started studying the CFA Franc - a neo-colonial currency union in Africa - this is exactly the audience I wanted for my research. I also learned so much from Pan African and other OG legends from the Global South who attended this conference.
Huge thank you to Ndongo Samba Silla and the IDEAS Africa Network. Connect with them! We need more research by and for Africans: workideas.org

đ¤đ˝The organizers of EAT are committed to popular education, relating political and economic concepts to peopleâs concrete lives thatâs interactive and providing materials that are accessible and fun.

Economics 4 Emancipation Salt Lake City aka E4E SLUTs is over!
We completed our last class this weekend by finding our comrades and their revolutionary strategies, talking about solidarity economics and building cosomovisions of abolition technology and care.
âIndigenous resistance IS cultural organizing.â - @sirena_sucia .
We also got into groups and began to dream about our own BIG IDEAS of projects we can build locally. ThenâŚan afterparty đ
Thank you to the Salt Lake participants who dedicated 5 Saturdays with us, @artaccessutah for the space and our co-facilitators @platanomics of @center4econdem and @sirena_sucia of @traviesa_studios for all your energy and care guiding us!
We know in times of chaos historically, communities have come together to study and act from that knowledge. We see this course as just a beginning - a seedling - for what can grow in Utah with intention, love for the people and the land.
Where do you want to see E4E next? Do you want to be trained up on the materials so you can deliver the course to your community? Let us know in the comments and visit our website. All our materials are available and đ!

A peek inside the classroom from our second to last session of @platanomics and @sirena_sucia of @traviesa_studios facilitated âEconomics 4 Emancipationâ in-person workshop from Salt Lake City!
As we imagine a better economic system, we want to be able to discern, name, and think critically about the different possibilities. In this module, we examined neoliberal capitalism, our current system, and four alternative economic systems. We analyzed the ownership, allocation, and governance of resources within each of those systems, considered their historical context, and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.
We also heard from very special guest @magueyerx aka Taty, and the lineage of indigenous economies she comes from as a 4th generation mezcalera in Oaxaca. We reflected on #caretechnologies by getting more critical about what we mean by technology and who gets to define âadvancement.â
Next week is our last class and we will miss this amazing group of organizers here in Utah!
**********************************************
Economics for Emancipation (E4E) is a no-cost seven-module introductory course informed by decades of dialogue with grassroots social justice & union organizers, and primarily #heterodox (radical) economists out of UMass Amherst.
It creates spaces for learning about alternatives to capitalism and applying the lessons to craft organizing strategies and community projects -- especially for folks who lack access to higher education or who are long out of school and want a refresher course.
E4E was created using a popular education approach that is accessible to organizers, educators, activists, and community members. If you are a member or leader of a grassroots or movement organization, this curriculum was designed to support your organizing work in your community.
We recommend that you gather a group of up to 25 people with a lead educator/facilitator to dive into the study and praxis of our course. Individuals can also take the course alone with the videos and interactive workbook.
