Worker cooperatives and democratic workplaces are growing steadily and meaningfully. Since 2020, the sector has grown 34%, while traditional small businesses only grew 13% since 2019.
Today, there are an estimated 1,300 worker co-ops and democratic workplaces employing 16,000 workers across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. In this year’s census, we identified 820 firms employing 13,520 workers, more than double the workforce counted just over a decade ago.
Let’s keep moving toward shared ownership, democratic governance, and workplaces built on values.

REI is refusing to reach a contract with its union workers. Again. REI is failing co-op principles by its anti-worker, anti-democratic actions. Union workers and co-op members are boycotting REI’s largest sale of the year to send a clear message: Members demand a REI Co-op with a union contract.
Workers are still facing union busting, cuts to benefits, and reduced healthcare access. Skip the anniversary sale and tell your people to do the same. Gear up with local outfitters!
Head to BoycottREI.com right now to show REI that you’re ready to vote with your wallet if they don’t reach a fair deal with the union.
No sale is worth funding REI’s anti co-op agenda. ✊

Hey you:
🪩 Irrepressible Artists - Artists who have felt the pain of our current economic systems, and know that something better must be out there.
🪩 Community Builders - People who value the things we can do together, that we can’t do alone.
🪩 Co-op Curious - Any individual or group that is curious to learn more about cooperatives in theory and in practice.
🌱After years of participating in an unjust economy, artists and culture bearers are searching for viable alternatives to the traditional models of cultural production. Cooperatives and the solidarity economy are gaining traction as a values-aligned solution. But what's the difference between a worker-owned cooperative and a purchasing cooperative? Is an ensemble a cooperative? Is talking about ownership inherently capitalist?
