Stilte voor de Storm Vier jaar lang was deze film in de maak. Het waargebeurde verhaal van de man die de grootste ramp uit de recente Nederlandse geschiedenis voorspelde. Couple of months ago already, I did Production Design for a fantasy short film together with Eva de Winter @eva.de.winter . For ‘Where Wildflowers Dare Not Pray’, we built a large, magical garden at the Ready Set studio @readyset_studios in Amsterdam, extending the physical set through Virtual Production. The main challenge was to make it appear as if there were multiple locations within the same garden. We worked with various interchangeable foreground elements to create depth and the illusion of a much bigger environment than it actually was. Apart from the whole garden, we also created a cottage interior, consisting of a simple L-shaped set, making it easy to assemble and disassemble. While this film will soon be making the rounds at the film festivals, it already got an honorable mention and it also won Best Production Design at the CP Film Festival in Breda. Het oude, krakende, vervallen huis heeft zijn beste tijd gehad. Het voelt als een plek waar de tijd stil heeft gestaan. De typisch Indonesische inrichting, vol met (Balinese) maskers en Wayang poppen, draagt bij aan de onheilspellende sfeer. Alsof er altijd iemand naar je kijkt. 🏚️🎭🌸 Maar naast de vervallen staat van het huis en de Indonesische decoraties, is het ook chaotisch en rommelig. 🗑️📦 Overal staan verhuisdozen en vuilniszakken, maar het merendeel van de inhoud ligt er juist buiten; alsof iemand ooit begon met afscheid nemen, maar halverwege stopte. ———————————— The old, creaking, decaying house has clearly seen better days. It feels like a place where time has stood still. The distinctly Indonesian interior — filled with (Balinese) masks and Wayang puppets — adds to the eerie atmosphere. As if someone is always watching you. 🏚️🎭🌸 But beyond the house’s decaying state and the Indonesian decorations, it’s also chaotic and messy. 🗑️📦 Moving boxes and garbage bags are scattered everywhere — but most of their contents are outside of them, as if someone once started to say goodbye… but never finished. 📚 A look into the research I did for @droomland_defilm earlier this year! Collecting pictures from various archives that were taken in the 1940's in the port of Rotterdam and on farms in Friesland. Also doing some reading into the time period and compiling additional info for the crew to use when scouting and dressing the set. A lot of fun to work on a small part of this film and to see the amazing result the crew created! If you're ever in need of a researcher, do let me know! Revisiting all of these projects on Instagram as a nice way to look back on the year :)

A while back the wonderful film 'Droomland' by @bartmakingart that I did historical research for had its premiere! 🌼 Some behind the scenes of Daar moet nog wat mee! Set dressing on this film meant not only paying attention to the continuity of family dinner scenes and siblings packing up moving boxes: it also meant working with a flock of sheep! But what a great crew this was and what a wonderful energy with @irisvanheusden.art.portfolio and @vanelkjelle on their beautiful set. Does this mean we can all add animal handling to our linkedin skill set?

🐑 Throwback: Just like last week I'd like to share a bit about a project that I loved working on as a setdresser when I was graduating: Daar moet nog wat mee! Also known as 'the movie with the sheep', this film was a different kind of challenge to work on but truly so much fun to be on set for doing art together with @iris_van_heusden and @vanelkjelle . 💫 SYNOPSIS: In this tragicomedy, three adult sisters and their brother come to the farm of their estranged, deceased mother to divide the inheritance. To their surprise, that includes a flock of sheep. 💫Throwback: Some behind the scenes of @merhamet_de_film from 2023! Worked on this project as both a researcher and set dresser. As a researcher @llykg and I explored the Turkish community in Rotterdam in the 1980's by going through photo archives and reading books about the time period to help with the design for the film. Working on this film as a set dresser was also a lot of fun: from dressing wedding decorations for a Turkish wedding in the 1980's to shooting in a gorgeous pink hair salon designed by @kirsten_mauduit , fun to look back on this one!

💫Throwback: A little trip down memory lane today since I realised I never posted about this wonderful graduation movie I was able to work on called @merhamet_de_film ! It's been a while but it was great to be both a researcher as well as a setdresser for this period film almost two years ago. A little synopsis: Mine (35) is confronted with feeling she failed as a mother on her 16 year old daughter Aysegül's wedding day. No one outside of the family knows that Aysegül is pregnant yet. Feelings of guilt and the realisation her daughter is just a child make Mine fight against the approaching goodbye.
