Happy 11th Anniversary to a project that didn’t just inspire me, it literally redirected the course of my life.
Today marks 11 years since
@Hezekiah3rd dropped the “Dreams Don’t Chase Themselves” album and short film. Looking back, I can honestly say I wouldn’t have had the courage to build Embassy: Interactive into what it is today if I hadn’t been a part of this journey.
Swipe through for a look back at the history:
Slide 2: Where it started. I first professionally linked with Hez for an
@embinteractive interview, then while filming a community project for Sneaker Villa (
@villajtm ) (shoutout
@aishawinfield ). I’d been a fan since 2008, but seeing his videos showing his commitment to health and community in Malcolm X Park made him the perfect subject for my first Villa video.
Slide 3: The pivot. A month later, Hez asked me to film the DDCT short film, written by Mike Beon (
@thekooleybopkid ). We shot scenes in my old apartment and at the Performance Garage, a space I now work at annually and where I met
@simonebee23 , who I’m now about to become cousins with in October 😉
Slide 4: Global impact. The project dropped Feb 10, 2015, with screenings from Toronto to Ghana to Cologne. Seeing
@oddisee perform my personal anthem “Own Appeal” at the NY release party was the moment I realized leaving my old career to go full-time with video/photo wasn’t just a dream, it was a necessity.
Slide 5: Full circle. The film was selected for
@blackstarfest in 2015. I couldn’t make it then, but I like to think that empty seat on the Q&A panel was waiting for me to eventually become the festival’s lead photographer years later. The film then landed on
@xfinity On Demand,
@amazonprime , and
@gravitasventures .
A year after this project, I quit my job and started “chasing” my dreams for real. It was the best decision I ever made.
