Happy birthday to Martha Graham, born on this day in 1894. Learn about the pioneering modern dancer, teacher, and choreographer at a new exhibition opening at the Library for the Performing Arts on May 20, "Martha Graham: The Mother of Psychological Dance," curated by @jackferver .
Happy Birthday to Martha Graham. 🎉
Long before her company took the stage at Jacob’s Pillow, Graham’s relationship with this place was already taking shape. As a student at the Denishawn School under Ted Shawn, her artistic voice began to emerge, and it would go on to redefine the landscape of modern dance.
In 1960, Graham made her first appearance at the Pillow. She presented a talk and introduced Errand Into the Maze on the Ted Shawn Theatre stage, fulfilling Shawn’s long-held hope of welcoming her work here.
In 1984, the Martha Graham Dance Company made its Pillow debut. Graham spent the week on site, engaging with the community and taking a final bow each night alongside her dancers.
Since then, the company has returned across decades. Each visit carries forward Graham’s legacy while continuing to evolve. From centennial celebrations and residencies to new works and reinterpretations, her presence remains woven into the history of the Pillow.
