Shabana Azmi | Dabba Cartel
My earliest memories of recognising Shabana Ji was seeing her in the nation building music video - Mile Sur Mera Tumhara on our TVs in early 90s. It was only many decades later, as a student at the Film Institute where I got to experience her incredible film work with so many sensitive and ever lasting performances.
As she takes on a new avatar yet again, I am so grateful that most of 2023 went into attempting to capture her unflinching performance, along with such a delectable ensemble from across the country.
Literally through rain or shine, led by Hitesh Bhatia and a number of relentless humans, Dabba Cartel - A Netflix original series, produced by Excel Entertainment is coming soon :)
Cast announcement video is out!
May 2016
Exactly 10 years ago, I wrapped filming my first independent feature film - Once Again.
Barely a year after finishing film school, getting to do this film was an absolute privilege. The critical commentary that followed was a blessing.
It was purely the grace, generosity and brilliance of the leads - Shefali Shah & Neeraj Kabi - that pulled us through an intense shoot schedule.
Nothing prepares for you better than actually doing the work, being on set, and the learning curve on this was a really steep one!
A decade later, our industry, storytelling, OTTs launched and viewing habits have changed completely. And yet, Once Again continues to quietly find its people - through posts, messages, and wonderfully unfiltered Letterboxd reviews from across the world. Filming this remains foundational in every way, and I am so grateful for it kickstarted my journey ahead.
I never got to see this film on the big screen - but the tales from each of these stills continues to be a visceral memory.
