Etta Sandry is an artist, educator, and facilitator whose interdisciplinary work is rooted in weaving and situated in the expanded material practices field between craft and creative research. Her work explores material sample making as an experimental practice and a way of thinking through material. Etta has exhibited work in the United States and Canada and was the 2022 Experimental Weaver in Residence at the Unstable Design Lab at the University of Colorado, Boulder where they now conduct research as a PhD student. Etta received an MFA in the Fibre & Material Practices program at Concordia University.

I spent the month of May in Berkeley at the @kalaartinstitute weaving and printing lace, stamping drafts, and peering through windows and gates while thinking about how to construct a print like a weaving, layering, pattern play, and permeability. I had such a wonderful time in Kala's warm and welcoming studio community!

Continuing our Season 9 theme of PLAY, this roundtable will focus on Failure and Experimentation. In the words of Etta, “to play is to follow rules, break them and then set new rules to be followed and broken again.”

Over the last few months I’ve been making small weavings as practice and samples for teaching classes at @catskill_weaving_school and @denverartmuseum - these feel quite different from the more structure-driven work I typically do but I’m loving their portability, improvisation, and engagement of the hand!
Summer weaving - happened so fast! Pleats woven in the @acreresidency fiber studio, hand lace sampler for an upcoming class at the @catskill_weaving_school , playing on the new @avllooms compu dobby in the @unstabledesignlab , and a little weft-faced stripey tapestry weaving on a delightful frame loom designed by @harmonyinbadtaste
Some fresh new prints and some revisited waffle drafts/drawings on view now as a part of Applied Arts at @specialist_sea until Apr. 20 along with other ambiguous, uh, instructions by Jesse Malmed, Mitsu Salmon, Meredith Waddel, and Ilana Zweschi! Thank you @_michaelmilano for organizing 🔷🟦🔷
Excited to head to Cleveland this weekend for the Praxis & Practice Digital Weaving Conference @praxisfiberworkshop ! I’ll be presenting on a panel with @ldevendorf@kw.textiles and @mariannefairbanks discussing the weave drafting software AdaCAD - I’ll speak to how I used it to weave samplers during my time at the @unstabledesignlab this fall and the shifts in woven design thinking it prompted.
Can’t wait for all the other presentations, weave chats, and hangs throughout the weekend 🤓
