We are delighted to announce Elina Vainio joins us as a member of PUBLICS board.
Elina Vainio is an artist based in Helsinki. Her practice explores the properties of materials with the aim of disrupting habitual assumptions in perception. The question of how not to take things for granted is a recurring theme in her work. This, combined with a conviction that language is inadequate to explain every facet of the world, resonates throughout her often site-specific or serial pieces.
In addition to her solo practice, Vainio works collectively with the Nomadic Kiln Group and frequently collaborates with choreographers and dancers.
She holds an MFA from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, and a BFA from Chelsea College of Art & Design, London. Her work has been exhibited at the Seoul Museum of Art (2025), EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art (2025), Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (2019), and the Gwangju Biennale (2018), among others.
We look forward to working together with Elina Vainio and all of our board members in 2025 as we expand the activities of The Centre for Curatorial Thinking as well as POSITIONING Symposia 2025-2028, PUBLICS Library, PUBLICS events and talks, PUBLICS Youth, PUBLICS Parahosting in parallel with the project’s longer-term curatorial programmes, PUBLICS Public Art Commissions.
PUBLICS board members for 2025 are (Chair) Saara Hacklin, (Vice Chair) Bassam El Baroni, Adelaide Bannerman, Taru Elfving, Pilvi Kalhama, Kati Laakso, Pilvi Takala and Elina Vainio.
