Explore the life and work of influential singer-songwriter Dory Previn, who wrote music for big names like Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Dionne Warwick. After a tabloid scandal and highly publicized mental health struggles, she reemerged in the ‘70s as an icon in the Laurel Canyon music scene. Watch “Dory Previn: On My Way to Where” March 20 at 8pm on PBS SoCal.
“On My Way to Where,” the documentary film about ’70s singer/songwriter Dory Previn, can now be viewed online! It’s a compelling telling of her life, and it includes some short excerpts from my 1995 radio interview with Dory for my show Spinning On Air on WNYC. On this day 14 years ago, Dory took her leave from this troubled earth. And no doubt she was indeed biodegradable.

S2 Episode 3 Bonus: Documenting Dory Previn wsg Julia Greenberg
We talk with Julia Greenberg, co-director of the excellent 2024 documentary, “Dory Previn: On My Way to Where.” The film recounts Dory’s far-flung creative life at the intersection of classic Hollywood, pop music, and Laurel Canyon bohemia. As a close friend of Dory’s, a performer of her music, and one of the carriers of her legacy (and her microphone 🎙️!), Julia shares stories of Dory’s painting and needlepointing in her Berkshires farmhouse, Frank Sinatra’s deaf cat, and plans for the Dory Previn archive.

On this day (well actually yesterday) in 1967, Valley of the Dolls was released, with the unforgettable theme by Dory and Andre Previn. About her lyrics, Dory said: “The lyric to the theme of Valley of the Dolls is the first time I made professional use of my own experience with drugs. The story was ripe for it. I knew what pills did to the speech pattern. The way one repeats phrases and never gets out the entire sentence...”
Dionne Warwick, KD Lang, Shawn Colvin, Andy Williams, Dory herself —who does your favorite version?
