While in Europe last month I asked some friends if they could tell me any old French horror folklore stories… i was open to anything: villages terrorized by countryside monsters, strange creatures crawling up out of French lakes, unexplained flea market hauntings, spontaneous combustion, really anything … and they did not disappoint. I was regaled with many a fine tale. My friend Nicolas told me one story about Le Diable Violoneux in which a fiddler (aka violoneux) shows up to a town and plays such wonderful music that all the townspeople start dancing, and they don’t stop. The bell rings for church service and no one shows up, they are still dancing… so, the ground beneath the town square opens plunging all the dancing villagers into the fiery pits of hell… where they are still dancing to this very day. I really like this story and talked with Grant Beyschau about using “Violoneux” a possible name for a hurdy gurdy/drum project we’ve been working on. So we’re trying it out as a name… introducing 𝓥𝓲𝓸𝓵𝓸𝓷𝓮𝓾𝔁:
