Belgian architect, urbanist and artist Luc Deleu has, over several decades, explored how we relate to and organise space.
Together with WIELS artistic director, he presents FOUNDER’S CHOICE, a comprehensive and richly illustrated overview of his work.
Bringing together projects across scales, from small-scale interventions to global propositions, the publication reflects on humanity’s spatial presence on Earth and on the role of art and architecture in shaping its meaning and direction.

Vandaag krijgen de brave kinderen cadeautjes… maar Luc Deleu kreeg ooit vooral een existentiële klap van Sinterklaas. 🎁😅 Niet omdat hij ontdekte wie Sinterklaas was, maar omdat z’n hele familie zó overtuigend tegen hem had gelogen.
Vanaf dan zag hij het overal terug: In het vierde studiejaar, op het college, in de Latijn-Griekse en zelfs aan de universiteit. Steeds opnieuw beloofden ze ‘ernst’, maar telkens opnieuw bleek het… niet serieus.
Een prachtig fragment dat toont waarom Luc zo’n unieke denker is: wars van façade, wars van conventie — steeds zoekend naar wat écht is.

Wie is Luc Deleu? ➡️ Luc Deleu (°1944) richtte in 1970 samen met zijn vrouw Laurette Gillemot T.O.P. Office op, waarmee hij de grenzen tussen architectuur, kunst en maatschappelijke reflectie verkent. Hij bouwt niet zelf, maar ontwikkelt alternatieve visies op ruimte, schaal en globalisering. Met zijn concept “orbanisme” bekijkt hij stedelijke ontwikkeling vanuit een mondiaal perspectief, los van lokale of commerciële belangen. Zijn werk varieert van theoretische stadsmodellen en manifesten tot sculpturale ingrepen in de publieke ruimte, steeds met aandacht voor de relatie tussen mens, mobiliteit en ecologie. Deleu staat bekend om zijn lef, humor en precisie, en daagt continu uit tot nieuw denken over de inrichting van onze wereld.

Oh, wat heb ik weer zó genoten van het opnemen van deze aflevering! 🤩 Tweeëneenhalf (!) uur sprak ik met Luc Deleu (conceptueel kunstenaar, architect en stedenbouwkundige). Ik leerde hem kennen als een meesterverteller – niet verwonderlijk, aangezien zijn praktijk inmiddels meer dan een halve eeuw beslaat. Juist daardoor is deze aflevering één van mijn favorieten tot nu toe…

This 24-hour manifestation is a spontaneous initiative by artists and artworkers, with the practical support of the M HKA STAFF.
Location: entrance hall M HKA, Leuvenstraat 32, 2000 Antwerpen
Over the course of the 25-hour manifestation, more than 120 artists, curators and cultural workers came together, contributing with performances, readings, video works, music and other gestures of solidarity. Each act of participation reflected a shared commitment to defending the vital role of the M HKA's existence in our city.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who poured effort, energy and solidarity into making this collective action possible. This is only the beginning. The path ahead remains long and our voices must continue to resonate. Stay engaged and follow Museum At Risk’s ongoing actions, like, follow, share, and help us spread the word.
dit is niet enkel een demonstratie maar een dringende noodzaak om verenigd op te komen voor de artistieke gemeenschap van Antwerpen, maar ook een krachtige manifestatie van collectieve kracht en gedeelde doelstellingen.
Tijdens de 25 uur durende manifestatie kwamen meer dan 120 kunstenaars, curatoren en culturele werkers samen. Zij droegen bij met performances, lezingen, videowerken, muziek en andere gebaren van solidariteit. Elke vorm van deelname weerspiegelde een gedeelde toewijding aan het verdedigen van de essentiële rol van het M HKA in onze stad.

ANTWERP PUBLIC ART COLLECTION // Art ahoy! We are proud to welcome a new permanent public artwork by Luc Deleu & T.O.P. Office on the Ledeganckkaai, Nieuw Zuid. Titled PortStarboard (BakboordStuurboord in Dutch), the sculpture is an intricate fusion of two steel staircases painted bright red and dark green – the classical nautical navigation colours for left (port) and right (starboard).
The integrated observation deck and colour-coding of the stairs suggest a clear orientation in space, while our perception of the sculpture itself is challenged by the unexpected tilting and scale of the two stairs.
PortStarboard was produced on the occasion of exhibition Future Plans 1970-2020 organised by @vlaams_architectuurinstituut in 2021 and acquired that same year for the Antwerp Public Art Collection (Collectie Kunst in de Stad). The work was then exhibited on the terrace of @desingelartscentre before now finding a permanent home on the Scheldt riverbank.

KUNST IN DE STAD // Ahoy, kunst! We zijn trots een nieuw permanent openbaar kunstwerk van Luc Deleu & T.O.P. Office te verwelkomen op de Ledeganckkaai, Nieuw Zuid. Het werk, getiteld PortStarboard (BakboordStuurboord in het Nederlands), is een ingenieuze versmelting van twee stalen trappen, geschilderd in felrood en donkergroen – de klassieke nautische navigatiekleuren voor links (bakboord) en rechts (stuurboord).
Het geïntegreerde uitkijkplatform en de kleurcodering van de trappen suggereren een duidelijke oriëntatie in de ruimte, terwijl onze perceptie van het sculptuur zelf wordt uitgedaagd door de onverwachte kanteling en schaal van de twee trappen.
PortStarboard werd geproduceerd naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling Future Plans 1970–2020, georganiseerd door het Vlaams Architectuurinstituut in 2021, en datzelfde jaar verworven voor de collectie van Kunst in de Stad. Het werk werd vervolgens tentoongesteld op het terras van DE SINGEL, voordat het nu een permanente plek heeft gevonden aan de Scheldeoever.

Following the publication of the book Founder’s Choice – a richly illustrated overview of the activities of T.O.P. office, compiled by Luc Deleu and published by Hopper & Fuchs – M HKA is bringing together a selection of the artist’s works for an INBOX presentation.
Since 1970, Deleu has been building, together with T.O.P. office, an architectural and artistic oeuvre: ranging from small-scale interventions to global concepts, and from (never realized) proposals to completed building projects. With a critical eye on the role of architecture and urbanism, and with radical imagination, Deleu engages with the workings of the world. He challenges us to continually reflect on humanity’s spatial presence and its consequences for our planet.
About Luc Deleu
Luc Deleu (°1944, Antwerp) has, since 1970 with his T.O.P. office, explored the boundaries between architecture and art. His work arises from radical ideas that are both visionary and playful: from stacks of containers to concepts of cities on a planetary scale. In his Orbanist Manifesto (1980), he already argued for an urbanism that embraces the entire planet. Deleu’s interventions invite reflection on how we use space and live together. He regards architecture and art not as opposites, but as two sides of the same way of thinking.
