Hideko Kataoka

Meet Hideko Kataoka, 2026 DPA Juror and Photo Editor at Newsweek Japan. Kataoka will be reviewing submissions as one of our jurors for the DPA 2026 Kataoka has been Director of Photography at Newsweek Japan since 2001. She has also served as a lecturer in photojournalism and documentary photography at Tokyo Polytechnic University since 2013, and as a member of the External Review Committee at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum since 2016. She regularly participates in portfolio reviews and has served as a juror for prestigious international photography festivals and competitions, including the World Press Photo, the W. My book titled “Where Do I Go?” was supposed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Lebanese Civil War exactly a year ago. It was about hope and overcoming. The question: 𝓦𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓮 𝓓𝓸 𝓘 𝓖𝓸? (لوين روح) was not supposed to be this timely again in April 2026. Yesterday, April 13, was 51 years to the day since that fateful day in 1975, and the same question is relevant again… I am grateful that the attention the book has been getting is allowing me (on my tiny micro level) to bring awareness about Lebanon, bear witness to our stories, amplify our voices, and put a face on some of the women who have inspired me and who still inspire me everyday. So here we go: all the way from Newsweek Japan — thank you 🙏🏼 Please keep talking about Lebanon and the goddesses who are persevering everyday.
