The Newmark J-School is proud to announce that Distinguished Professor M. Gessen has won the Pulitzer Prize for Opinion Writing.
The prize recognizes Gessen's “illuminating collection of reported essays on rising authoritarian regimes that draw on history and personal experience to probe timely themes of oppression, belonging and exile” for The New York Times, where they serve as an Opinion columnist.
“This recognition speaks to the clarity, depth, and fearlessness that define M. Gessen's work,” said Dean Graciela Mochkofsky. “We are incredibly proud to have them as part of our faculty and to see their contributions recognized at the highest level.”

For Gary Lavariere of the Berkshire Eagle, his major takeaway from the Executive Program in News Innovation and Leadership was the clarity he gained around how to approach leadership in a news setting.
He started the program as Chief Revenue Officer and just two months after graduating, he was named Publisher of the legacy media outlet. He learned to lead with empathy and navigate the nuances of newsroom dynamics, which has enabled his success in his new role.
If you’re looking to grow as a news leader, the Executive Program is here to help you do that.

The rise of AI-generated video online may be making it harder to figure out what’s really happening, but that’s where the field of visual verification comes in.
Visual Investigations faculty Travis Mannon, who’s also a senior video producer at @onthemedia , highlights the importance of this open source reporting in relation to the ICE presence in Minneapolis earlier this year, and why visual verification is an important part of every reporter’s toolkit.
Maritza L. Félix, founded Conecta Arizona, a WhatsApp-based news service delivering critical, real-time information in Spanish to border communities often left out of traditional coverage, in 2020. She knew quickly that she needed to level up her skillset to become an entrepreneur and newsroom leader.
So she joined the Executive Program in News Innovation and Leadership, which gave her the space and the resources to grow into her role. Since then, she was recognized with the Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation and her organization has received $100,000 in funding from Press Forward to expand its work.
If you’re also looking for an opportunity to upskill in strategy, product, audience, revenue & leadership, join us for the next cohort.

Today, we’ve launched our first-ever Alumni Impact Report, offering a data-driven look at how Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism graduates are influencing the future of journalism at a moment when the field is being fundamentally redefined.
Drawing on data from the school’s 18 graduating classes, the report documents where Newmark J-School alumni have landed, what they are earning, and what kinds of journalism they are producing.
“As we mark our 20th anniversary this September, this report reflects a clear trajectory for the field — one where our alumni are helping journalism become more accessible, more representative, and more accountable to the public,” said Dean Graciela Mochkofsky. “It’s a picture we are proud to see, and one that challenges us to keep building on this momentum.”

When Laura Krantz McNeill joined the Executive Program in News Innovation and Leadership, she was already asking big questions, like how do you connect journalism with sustainable revenue?
Through her Capstone Project and the support of her cohort, Laura sharpened her thinking on the intersection of editorial, product, and audience and applied it directly to her work. The results speak for themselves.
Within a year of completing the program, she was promoted to Senior Editor at The Chronicle of Higher Education, followed by a move to the Associated Press, where she now serves as Senior Director, Loyalty & Growth.
What helped her make that leap? The cohort. Sharing a year-long experience with other leaders working through similar challenges provided the space, perspective, and support necessary to grow.
If you’re ready to take the next step to grow as a newsroom leader, this program is designed for you.
