OnlyBans has just made its California debut at @honorfrasergallery in Los Angeles! Created by sex workers and allies, OnlyBans is a digital game that shows the experiences of real sex workers facing online surveillance, social media censorship, and financial discrimination. Nearly four years since its conception, this work has traveled the world, been featured everywhere from Rolling Stone to Hyperallergic, and continues to resonate with sex worker communities and beyond. As so many sex workers predicted, content moderation algorithms have disproportionately harmed the already marginalized. Technology created to block allegedly sexual content has also been used to block unfavorable political content (such as material related to movements for Black lives, abortion rights, and Palestinian liberation). This is the third version of the game, which has gone through continuous development thanks to feedback from community members. After folks told us Version 2 was very realistic but depressing (reflecting the actual world we live in), we decided to take a more sci-fi approach in Version 3 to imagine future possibilities for a liberated Internet. Our newest version, which includes a supernatural entity named M0THER, was inspired by the dreams and altars shared by sex workers in workshops we co-hosted with @decodingstigma . Designing care-based models for collective futures, this member group will foster cultural value through projects at the intersection of social impact, the future of work, and cooperative organizing.

Following some enraging comments on my @freeda_en interview, I wanted to debunk a few assumption people made via a non-exhaustive list of reading recos. Those who made those comments won’t see this, but since lots of you often ask for 📚 recos I’m sharing these so you have some comebacks to people’s assumptions. Assumption 1️⃣ “Banning SW on social media is not a problem bc SW is harmful to women, who only do it bc of limited options. SW should be hidden from social media / criminalised.” WRONG. Aside from the not-so-hidden wh0rephobia in comments like these, this simply isn’t true. As Juno Mac & Molly Smith argue in “Revolting Prostitutes” (a MUST READ for any feminist + s3x posi / SW adjacent folk), people get into SW for all sorts of reasons: migration & borders, survival, but also - as Coombes et al. wrote - bc it’s a flexible job for people with disabilities or time constraints. OR bc it’s their choice. Conflating SW with harm or trafficking & criminalising SWs &/or clients actually makes it *harder* for survival SWs & even trafficked victims to earn a living, come forward & seek help when they need it, also depriving people who choose SW as a last resort of that last resort. In short: this discriminates against SWs & contributes to harming them. 2️⃣ “Being on social media isn’t a right.” WRONG. The activism & research field of platform governance has proven time & time again that a handful of private social media companies control the flow of information & social interactions for large parts of society. Bc of this, as Klonick, DeNardis & Hackl, & Schwarz have written, denial of service - aka de-platforming - is the 1 of the greatest threats to democracy, esp when users have no recourse & there’s no transparency about decision-making. 3️⃣ “Expressing oneself s3xually isn’t a right & platforms banning s3x & bodies isn’t a problem.” WRONG. Various court cases have ruled even p0rn is a form of free speech. Plus, as Victoria Bateman wrote in The S3x Factor, women (& people in general) aren’t really free til they have control of their bodies & reproductive system. Platforms governing & censoring our bodies are removing that control from us ⤵️ in comments

So grateful to have had this opportunity and to be in community with our amazing Mentor-in-Residence @kameelahr and the rest of the brilliant cohort that I shared the stage with @m__tina @mipsterzofficial @decodingstigma @morehshin 😎 It looks like we had a great time and some laughs up there together although I can’t remember a single word that was said 🎤🤣
