An excerpt from the book’s introduction:
On an exquisite Sunday in August of 2009, Jay-Z and Beyoncé went to Williamsburg. Along with over 6,000 fans who had waited two hours in line-“a sea of plaid, straw hats, flow-y dresses and V-necks, according to Gothamist-they watched an hour-long performance on the waterfront by Grizzly Bear, who had just released their landmark album, ‘Veckatimest.’ It was the season-end finale of a series once held at the long-empty McCarren Pool. The Pool Parties came to life in the summer of 2006, with free performances by local indie acts. Besides the music, there were Slip ‘N Slides, Hula Hoops, and constant people-watching: a catwalk, theme park, and pickup scene, all at once. The parties instantly became a staple of summer in the city-so much so that, in 2008, the mayor announced a $50 million renovation of the pool, ending its life as a concert venue. The series moved a few blocks south, to East River State Park, a once-bustling railyard where boats off-loaded cargo for more than a century. The band was introduced before a cloudless skyline by an unlikely emcee: New York’s senior senator Chuck Schumer.
