AKA TO SHIRO | 4-Perf 500T 35mm “We wanted to mark our debut as a director duo in a way that felt true to our hearts. And coming from a background of dance, the dream was always to shoot choreography on film. The honest texture in the image combined with the open gate really allows the choreography to breathe within the frame, which was really important for a project like this. It was like the whole crew was synchronized in one dance, and with that synergy, we managed to land many of the shots in a single take. In many ways, “Aka to Shiro” also represents us as filmmakers. The film sits right at the intersection of the things that inspire us the most, movement, visual storytelling, and emotional narrative. One side of our collaboration comes from an aesthetic and editorial sensibility shaped by fashion and visual composition, while the other is rooted in choreography, rhythm, and the technical understanding of movement. David Vu is a filmmaker, dancer, choreographer, creative director, and videographer who has built a global following through dance-driven visuals, streetwear influences, and dynamic camerawork. He and his partner, Yasmin, also formed the duo D+Y, collaborating with a range of international brands across various creative projects. Recently, David released a choreography video set to Yuka Chiba’s “Annyeonghaseyo,” filmed in Vietnam. Instead of relying on familiar landmarks, the video focuses on street settings that highlight everyday textures and local identity while maintaining a stylized, contemporary aesthetic. The choice of location, combined with a cross-Asian creative reference, reflects how creators are increasingly using Vietnam as an active setting. The project also points to Vietnam being framed through a more globally oriented lens, moving away from traditional or touristic portrayals, while highlighting its growing presence within fashion, dance, and digital content.
