ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: MY LADY NICOTINE: David Caines
Feu d’artifice, 2025
Acrylic dispersion on cotton
61 x 61 x 3 cm
David Caines’s paintings playfully reflect the human world of culture, drawing on imagery from early film and photography, art history and education, theatre, dance and performance. He occasionally subverts or undermines this wistful imagery by inserting unwelcome intruders such as monsters, clowns, bears, pixies, trolls and dolls – time travellers from other eras. At the moment most of his paintings record the goings-on in an imaginary art academy, somewhere in the middle of the 20th century. There is something off kilter with this particular art school: sculptors carve out demonic idols and garden gnomes, creatures lurk in the studios, and the life models are extinct humans from the Pleistocene age.
David Caines is a visual artist, writer, and designer based in London. He studied at Chelsea College of Art & Design between 1982–1986. In 2007, After 16 years working as a graphic designer and art director in the cultural sector, he began painting, working independently from his home studio. In 2025, David’s painting ‘monstrous endeavour’ won the prestigious Lady Grantchester Prize as part of the John Moores Painting Prize.
Caines is also co-editor and designer of COMPOST art magazine, an independent art publication showcasing creative work from a wide-ranging network of artists, performers, academics, writers and collectors. Issue 4, ‘In Flames’, launched last week, consumed by an elemental force which fuels and feeds us, seduced by its scorch and blaze. Get your copy @compost_art_zine

Fire! An alarm call, a weapon discharged. The semaphore of a signal beacon, or a wildfire raging. Burning up with devotion, desire, or just plain fever. Damnation proclaimed in ecstatic tongues of flame. This issue stokes the kindling, in thrall to the incendiary potential of a Molotov cocktail, the molten annihilation of lava. Consumed by an elemental force which fuels and feeds us, seduced by its scorch and blaze.

A splendid and extremely busy opening last Thursday of Bompas and Parr’s ‘My Lady Nicotine’ exhibition in their new space, Woodward Henry, which examines the cultural impact of nicotine both good and bad throughout history. The refreshments were by far the most imaginative i’ve ever tasted, the highlight were what looked like filthy old fags in a dirty ashtray but in fact were delicious tofu parfait cigarettes. The ash was made from mushrooms. There were also ‘finger staining’ devilled eggs and tobacco smoked fish. Big thanks to curator Sophia Olver for showing my recent painting ‘feu d’artifice’ which is one of a series of pictures looking behind the scenes at the in-camera effects of early films. ‘feu d’artifice’ concerns Jean Cocteau’s 1946 film ‘La Belle et la Bête’ known for it’s incredible special effects devised by René Clément. When Beauty is in Beast’s castle the walls and furniture are alive. The stone faces on the fireplace breath out smoke as she walks by. In my painting the fireplace is enjoying a cigarette between takes.

I'm delighted to be featured in Bompas & Parr's forthcoming exhibition 'My Lady Nicotine', in their new studio space in Glasshouse Yard EC1A.
Happily, it's over 20 years since I enjoyed a cigarette, but before that my everyday life was inextricably linked to nicotine in a way I find almost unbelievable today.
The exhibition will look at the good and the bad aspects of nicotine, and the lasting cultural significance of the drug through the ages.
The exhibition has limited opening hours - Fridays noon-5pm - but you can make an appointment to visit.
