CRACKED GLAZE by Matthew Wright
CD / digital
Performed by virtuoso vocalist Sofia Jernberg, Ensemble Klang (Michiel van Dijk, Erik-Jan de With, Anton van Houten, Pete Harden, Saskia Lankhoorn and Joey Marijs) and Wright’s improv/electronic group Spheric Totemic (Mandhira de Saram, Neil Charles, Alexander Hawkins, Stephen Davis and Matthew Wright).
"The imaginative, elegant performance of this composition, the careful negotiations between the compositional elements, and the rich, spontaneous improvisational languages of all the musicians, as well as Wright’s meticulous, layered post-production, blur the elusive distinctions between experimental, contemporary music, modern jazz, and free improvisations, and cement Cracked Glaze's deeply immersive effect."

"... one may wonder why this very beautiful album remained in the vaults for so long ... Wheeler’s style remains as refined as it is confident ... beautiful and moving"
-- Jazz Mania
" ... an album that sees the light after thirty years and not before time, Kenny perhaps at the peak of his later and smoother era"

PREVIEW: FR#303 Cracked Glaze by @1977mattwright / Sam Bailey’s Unruly Trio | 14.05.26, doors 7pm at Fruitworks, Canterbury CT1 2NP
Composer, producer and sound designer Matthew Wright introduces his new project Cracked Glaze, including a Q&A with the composer and an immersive playback of the 46-minute album, released in May on CD/digital by @falsewallscjmitchell (Faversham). Cracked Glaze was performed by vocalist Sofia Jernberg, Ensemble Klang (Netherlands) and Wright’s improv/electronic group Spheric Totemic. The piece is built around a ‘spine’ of one long, descending scale, which is combined with other notation and improvisation.
‘this whole recording is rare and wonderful … the joy of hearing great improvisors at the top of their game, a murderers’ row new music ensemble, and a near flawless recorded document’ (Nate Wooley)
@sambaileymusician ’s Unruly Trio is a new project featuring bassist David Leahy and clarinetist @teejjacksonTom . Using earlier styles of jazz as starting points, they find ways of tearing the music apart before patching it back up again.
